Learning, teaching and interaction

The strategic core field of learning, teaching and interaction examines these phenomena in teacher education at different stages of life and in various environments, while also looking at their psychological processes and mechanisms.

Multidisciplinary and in-depth research

Global and societal changes and transitions make research-based understanding of learning, teaching and interaction essential

How do digitalization, multilingualism and the need for continuous learning influence learning practices, teaching and interaction between people? What factors have an impact on the present state of basic education, and how to influence it in the education system and society?

Using multidisciplinary approaches and a combination of methods, we can gain comprehensive knowledge about the phenomena and related underlying factors in this core field. Through longitudinal studies, we can monitor the effects of school transitions as well as early factors from birth in the learning of literacy and mathematical skills as well as children’s self-esteem as a learner.

Those factors identified as affecting learning are taken as targets for interventions and experimental research, which can help support learners throughout their educational paths and at different stages of life.

JYU’s unique longitudinal settings and data sets enable the extensive exploration of the backgrounds of learning and learning difficulties.
Learning and interaction are necessary for renewal, creativity and change.

Research to support decision-making

Jarmo Hämäläinen
Professor Jarmo Hämäläinen is Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology.

Extensive international comparisons and evaluations of education systems reveal learning outcomes of children, youth and adults as well as factors related to studies, the home and school environment. We can use this research to monitor changes in the education system and provide information to support decision-making.

Our research on the processes of interaction investigates technology-supported learning and interaction, multidimensional interaction in therapy settings and its effects on behavioural changes, and various issues related to family dynamics.

Collaboration

In our core field of learning, teaching and interaction, we cooperate closely with various partners, including ministries, the Finnish National Agency for Education, regional education providers, schools, and companies. One of our aims is to provide research-based knowledge in support of educational decision-making.

Research into learning, teaching and interaction also covers a wide range of themes and applications:

  • the effect of remote communication tools in interaction
  • how learning environments should be designed
  • the functionality of digital tools for learning
  • learning Finnish as a second language as well as the learning of foreign languages
