Strategic core fields of research

Tackling societal challenges requires multidisciplinary cooperation. Solutions are sought in six strategic core fields of research.

Top Research and Excellence

The high-quality research of the university promotes comprehensive and competence for individuals in society

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has four Centres of Excellence in Research designated by the Research Council of Finland for the period 2022-2029 and three for the period 2018-2025. JYU coordinates three of them and is a partner in four Centres of Excellence.

We have two Academy Professors for the period 2021-2026. The Academy Professorship is the most prestigious research position funded by the Research Council of Finland. The Research Council of Finland appoints new Academy Professors approximately every three years for a six-year term.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has a number of the European Research Council (ERC)-funded researchers in a variety of disciplines. ERC supports multidisciplinary research excellence with long-term research funding.

The Research Council of Finland funds Finnish universities to enhance their research profiles. The funding opportunity is often referred to as Profi. JYU has chosen its profiling areas on the basis of its research priorities and the level of research.

Finnish Flagships are large centres of excellence, combining high-quality research and diverse scientific and societal impact with strong collaboration with the business sector and other actors in society. Currently, JYU leads one and is involved in two more Flagships.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ aims to actively make research results available for use. You can browse and filter all our research projects and groups via our search page.

Doctoral education

Around 150 new doctorate holders graduate each year from the six faculties of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Our aim is to train research professionals and experts in different fields with a wide range of skills to meet society's needs.

During their training, doctoral researchers gain in-depth knowledge of their field of research to enable them to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and to generate new scientific knowledge. In addition to independent research, the degree includes studies in discipline-specific and transferable skills.

Our laboratories are often available also to partners to hire.

Research Facilities and Infrastructures

Our high-quality research services and infrastructure support both national and international research projects.

Equipment, laboratories, databases and materials are often available not only to researchers and students, but also to partners or for hire.
