Centre for Applied Language Studies
Our research has three focus areas: assessment of language proficiency and for learning, language learning, teaching and multiliteracies, and language in communities and societies. These areas are interlinked and aim to explore individual, community and societal language phenomena and challenges and to provide research-based solutions.

The doctoral programme at the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS) is associated with the research on applied language studies conducted at CALS in the areas of assessment of language proficiency and for learning; language learning, teaching and multiliteracies; and language in communities and societies. As research on applied language studies is multi-disciplinary, doctoral studies at CALS are suitable for candidates with a background not only in languages or linguistics, but also for those with an interest in language and a background in education or social studies in general.
If you are interested in doing a PhD at CALS, please read more about our focus areas of research and contact our degree programme manager Petteri Laihonen before applying.

The Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS) is a research institute at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. The aim of the centre is to develop language education on a wide-ranging basis. Research conducted in the CALS anticipates and takes into account social needs and issues. Common to all research is the view on language as a social and interactive phenomenon that constructs identities and culture.
Research projects are characterized by a multidisciplinary and applied approach that brings together perspectives from, for example, language study, sociology, educational research, and pedagogy. Research is focused on the effects of social changes on language education.
