The Department of History and Ethnology (DHE) studies the activities of people and human communities, their conditions and consequences over time. We offer a well-rounded education that emphasises analytical skills and critical evaluation of knowledge. DHE offers Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees in History, Ethnology and Anthropology.

Our staff will help you, and you can use the expertise of our professors and other teachers and researchers.

Research at the Department of History and Ethnology

The Department of History and Ethnology's unique combination of disciplines - history, ethnology, and anthropology - allows for fresh perspectives and new scientific openings. The department's research focuses on the following themes: power, structures and crises, temporal complexity and well-being, sustainability and education.

The department's methodological strengths include memory studies, the development and application of digital methods in humanities research and ethnographic research. Historical research focuses on the early modern to modern period. Regionally, the Department of History and Ethnology's research extends from Finland to the global context and almost all continents.
