Multidisciplinary and up-to-date research responds to the challenge of contemporary society to understand the diverse and changing linguistic and communicative landscapes of our environment.

Participation in a multilingual and technological world is a big theme of reserach

The research of the Department of Language and Communication Studies is located in the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s core fields of research of Language, Culture and Society, and is also closely linked to two other focus areas: Learning, teaching and interaction, and Information technology and people in the information society. In addition, the department will produce new knowledge with a societal impact in the profiling area of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which focuses on multilingualism.

It also includes the Sign Language Centre, which is responsible for the highest level of sign language research and education in Finland, in accordance with a special national mandate granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Doctoral School in the Department of Language and Communication Studies

The doctoral programme of the Department of  Language and Communication Studies has specialisations as follow:  
Applied linguistics,  Communication, English language, Finnish language, Finnish sign language, German language and culture, Intercultural Communication), Journalism, Romance philology, Russian language and culture and Swedish language.

The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a cross-disciplinary cooperation network that supports doctoral researchers at different stages of their work towards a doctoral degree.

The doctoral programme trains international and interdisciplinary researchers capable of independent research that generates new, critical scientific knowledge and follows the principles of good scientific practice. In addition to carrying out scientific work, the programme prepares students for demanding specialist positions, the creation and maintenance of scientific networks and international scientific publishing.
