Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ conducts internationally significant research and provides state-of-the-art teaching for psychology professionals. The department's teaching focuses in particular on developmental and educational psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and work and organizational psychology.

Get to know the Department of Psychology

Finland's first psychology professorship was established in 1936 at the Jyväskylä School of Education. Almost 90 years after its foundation, the department's research activities are wide-ranging, focusing on learning and teaching, child and adolescent development, psychotherapy, work life and brain research.

Over the years, research in this field has become highly recognized not only in Finland but also internationally. Around one third of graduating psychologists in Finland graduate from The Department of Psychology at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. 

The Department of Psychology is located in Mattilanniemi, in the Kärki building.

Studying at the Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology provides the opportunity to study for a master's degree, majoring in psychology, to study psychology as a minor subject, and to pursue postgraduate studies for licentiate and doctoral degrees. 

The department's teaching is particularly oriented towards the fields of developmental and educational psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and work and organizational psychology.

Training and teaching for the various degrees is planned and implemented in collaboration with Psykonet, a network connecting all the university departments of psychology in Finland. 

Psychotherapy Training and Research

There is a Psychotherapy Training and Research Centre that operates within the Department of Psychology. The Training and Research Centre offers high quality psychotherapy training, representing different individual psychotherapy methods as well as family and couples therapy. 
 

Doctoral studies

The PhD programme in Psychology is one of the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. Students belong to only one doctoral programme, but they may choose to participate in activities organised by multidisciplinary, nationally and/or internationally networked doctoral training networks and research communities.

The Department of Psychology conducts internationally recognised research in psychology. Research focuses on the foundations and development of the human mind, learning and psychological interventions.

Research at the Department of Psychology covers a wide range of areas of psychology. Research uses a variety of methods, including experimental designs, surveys, observation, interviews, statistical analysis and neuroscientific methods. The research carried out at the Department aims to understand human behaviour, thinking, emotional life and psychological processes in different contexts and to develop applied solutions in the field of psychology.
