ERC-funded researchers at the Ģֱ

The European Research Council (ERC) is a prestigious research funder. The ERC promotes cross-cutting research excellence through long-term research funding.

Professor Hannu Häkkinen 2024-2029,  ERC Advanced Grant Funding

Hannu Häkkinen’s ERC project “Dynamic Nanocluster – Biomolecule Interfaces” is especially targeted to particles in the size class of only a few nanometres. Their atomic structure is known from experimental studies and it is possible to construct their precise atomic-level models. The computational methods developed in the project will be used for applications related to nanomedicine. They can seek new solutions for cancer treatment.

Associate Professor Jussi Lehtonen 2025-2030, ERC Consolidator Grant

Jussi Lehtonen’s ERC project, Unified theory of sexual selection, seeks to develop a coherent mathematical theory of kin selection, which would integrate earlier models through a unified mathematical structure.

Associate Professor Suvi Ruuskanen 2024-2029, ERC Consolidator Grant

Suvi Ruuskanen’s ERC project “The role of the gut microbiome in host responses to environmental variation: within and across generations and species” helps understand the role the gut microbiome plays in organisms’ adaptation to environmental changes, and on what time scale. The issue is addressed from the molecular level up to evolution. The focus is especially on gut microbiome, which is studied experimentally in wild birds.

Academy Research Fellow Heikki Mäntysaari 2024-2029, ERC Consolidator Grant

Heikki Mäntysaari wants to understand the composition of matter when it can no longer be divided into smaller components. In addition, he studies interactions between these smaller building blocks of matter.

Associate professor Ere Nokkala 2024-2029, ERC Consolidator Grant

Ere Nokkala's project aims to change the way the history of European political economy is written. Rather than focusing on the predecessors of modern economic methods, models and principles, the project's researchers place the concepts of political economy from the 18th century in their historical context.

Associate Professor Teea Kortetmäki 2024-2029, ERC Starting Grant

Teea Kortetmäki´s project examines change in land use, which is one of the main reasons for biodiversity loss. The project creates a new kind of theory for the environmental ethics of land use, in which land use and its ethical sustainability is viewed using the tools of environmental ethics.

Senior Researcher Elina Laanto 2024-2029, ERC Starting Grant

Elina Laanto´s project studies the biology and ecology of giant phages. Phages are viruses that infect bacteria and they are some of the most diverse and prevalent creatures on earth. Even though they are invisible to eye, they play a significant role in maintaining the diversity of life.

Associate Professor Fabien Cougnon 2023-2028, ERC Consolidator Grant

Fabien Cougnon´s project investigates tying knots in molecules. Cougnon and his group are working to expand knowledge on the subject and, in the future, to produce large, knotted molecules usable for practical applications in catalysis in the future

Associate professor Ilkka Kronholm 2023-2028, ERC Consolidator Grant

Ilkka Kronholm’s project deals with genetic variation. The experimental estimation of the interaction of mutations requires large amounts of data. In the project long-term evolution experiments are conducted with microbes.

Associate professor Tuomas Orponen 2023-2028, ERC Consolidator Grant

Tuomas Orponen’s project aims to make progress in several well-known problems in geometric measure theory, including Vitushkin's conjecture from the 60s, and the Furstenberg set conjecture proposed by Tom Wolff in the 90s.

Senior researcher Veli-Matti Karhulahti 2022-2027, ERC Starting Grant

Veli-Matti Karhulahti's gaming research project investigates intense gaming experiences and related health. The multinational project applies longitudinal qualitative research methods in South Korea, Slovakia and Finland.

Academy researacher Kezilebieke Shawulienu 2022-2027, ERC Starting Grant

Kezilebieke Shawulienu's project focuses on designer quantum materials, a key area of research in the field of dense matter physics. The aim is to experimentally realise 2D topological superconductors in so-called van der Waals heterostructures and study the emergent states of matter that arise.

Professor Suvi Saarikallio 2022-2027, ERC Consolidator Grant

Suvi Saarikallio's r esearch addresses music as a social-emotional resource for young people. The music education project renews scientific understanding on why, when and for whom music serves as a resource for growth and well-being.

Professor Minna Torppa 2021-2026, ERC Consolidator Grant

Minna Torppa's project in the field of education studies the early development of mathematical skills. It will investigate what early skills or practices at home, nursery and school predict later development and how to better support mathematical skills and motivation to learn mathematics.
