Doctoral Education

The Ģֱ offers doctoral education in 18 doctoral programmes. We train researchers and experts with a broad range of skills to meet society's needs.

The Ģֱ's 18 doctoral programmes have a total of around 1 500 doctoral researchers. During their training, doctoral researchers gain in-depth knowledge of their field of research to enable them to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and to generate new scientific knowledge. In addition to independent research, the degree includes studies in discipline-specific and transferable skills. The doctorate can be completed in four years of full-time study. The university graduates around 150 new doctoral students each year.

A dissertation is a research-based, solid scientific presentation from the doctoral student’s field of study. It represents the student’s ability to independently and critically apply the methods of scientific research and create new scientific information. - JYU Dissertation Requirements

For dissertation supervisors

As stipulated in the Degree Regulations, each doctoral student has a designated supervisor-in-charge. The doctoral student and the supervisor-in-charge annually confirm a supervision document saved in an electronic system. The purpose of the supervision of a dissertation is to ensure that the doctoral student achieves the academic qualification required from a doctorate and that the dissertation fulfils the University’s dissertation requirements. - General Principles of JYU Graduate School

Ģֱ Graduate School

Transferable skills studies common for all doctoral students are arranged by, for example, the Open Science Centre, the Methodology Centre for Human Sciences (IHME), the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) and the units of University Services. The offering of transferable skills studies is planned in cooperation between the unit that arranges the teaching, the Graduate School, and the doctoral schools of faculties. - General Principles of JYU Graduate School
