Open Science Centre: Researcher and personnel trainings
The research and personnel trainings of the Open Science Centre are educational units aimed at JYU researchers, those working on a dissertation and other personnel. So everyone is welcome to join!
More information on trainings, schedules and signing up below.
It is also possible to get credit for doctoral studies courses from these research trainings:
online course (1 credit) is suitable for completing the open science section of JOPS. The online course goes through the research process from the perspective of openness, and its purpose is to provide support for thinking about one's own research: when research can be open and whether some parts should be kept closed.
The course is suitable for the open science section of JOPS, and in many doctoral schools, alternatively also for elective studies - the participant should check the suitability of their own field of study from JOPS or the educational planner of his doctoral school. More information about the course from the education listing below.
course (2 ECTS) consists of at least 4 research trainings by Open Science Centre. In many doctoral schools, the course is suitable for JOPS elective studies - the participant should check the suitability of their own field of study with JOPS or the educational planner of their doctoral school. The LIBJ2002 course replaces the HYTJ2500 and JSBJ1610 courses of the previous JOPS, i.e. it corresponds to them in terms of content.
Trainings included in the course:
- Dissertation start-up
- Research data management
- Open access publishing
- At least 1 other researcher training by Open Science Centre:
- Choosing the publication channel
- Openness of research methods
- Open education or
- Research merits.
Instructions for completing the course:
- Add the complete course to your study plan and register for the course at Sisu.
- Sign up for partial trainings in the , Kongressi. Links to these training-specific registrations are also in the training listing below.
- When you have completed at least 4 required partial trainings, request course registration by email from Marjo Vallittu.

This resource is an introduction to open science and research principles and practices for doctoral students and other research active members new to openness.
Open responsible science is a contemporary way of planning the research process. Participants will explore different aspects of open science and consider it's the advantages to their own research.
Open science is about the whole research process from planning your research, data management, publishing and to scientific communication. Advantages of open science include increased visibility for the research and improved accessibility.
At every step the material can be related to the research you are working on and aims to support your progress as a researcher. Participants will work on a reflective open science handbook.
Course material is in English, and the reflective essay can be written in English or in Finnish.
Course is recommended for first or second year of your study.
You can get more information about open science and research from many different perspectives from the researcher and personnel trainings of Open Science Centre, because openness is part of the normal processes of research.
There is information about subject-specific trainings that are regularly part of our training offer, e.g. publications, research materials and open learning, on this website in subject units. In addition to them, individual trainings can also be found in .

The recommendations and guidelines of Open Science encourage openness and transparency in research methods. But what does transparency of research methods mean and how can you promote it in your own research? This training will introduce you to practices and tools that can help you open up your own research methods, both at the beginning of the research process and during the publication phase. We will also discuss the challenges that the use of AI as a research method - for example in literature reviews and data analysis - poses for research transparency. You will also get tips on how to find methodological sources, as a well-rounded understanding of research methods is the first step towards methodological transparency.
Note: a similar training has been organised in the past under the title Methodology Guides and Databases.
