Higher education research is broadly focused on higher education as a social institution, as a whole formed by organizations and professions. Furthermore, questions related to teaching and learning are in central focus. In the area of social higher education research, a wide range of national, international and transnational higher education themes are examined, such as academic careers, the functioning of higher education institutions as organizations and the effects of policy reforms on higher education. 

Higher education pedagogic research examines teaching, studying and learning in universities and universities of applied sciences . The research focuses, for example, on the work of university teachers, teacher training and curriculum work, as well as the development of students' agency, the prerequisites for wisdom, and working life skills.
