Biography

The main areas of interest are the psychological and philosophical study of wisdom and adult cognitive development. Kallio is Associate Adjunct Professor of Adult Cognitive Development at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and Associate Adjunct Professor of Adult Psychological Development at the University of Tampere.  He has also been an active and extensive participant in the Finnish social debates. Her edited volume "Development of thinking in Adulthood - A Multi-Perspective Approach" (2016) is the first book in Finnish in its field, with numerous editions (6 paper editions and an electronic edition; 7 editions in 2023). She is also a founding member and Honorary President of the European Society for the Developmental Psychology of Adulthood (ESRAD) and her article is listed in the Oxford University Online Bibliography (2013/2018) in the section on psychological cognitive development in adulthood as one of the most important articles in the field. Recent publications include (Ed., 2020, "Development of adult thinking: interdisciplinary perspectives on cognitive development and adult learning" (Routledge). Forthcoming, in the press -books: Kallio, E.K. & Tynjälä, P. (Eds). What is Wisdom and Can it Be Taught. Philosophical, Psychological and Pedagogical Perspectives (Routledge: Advances in theoretical and philosophical psychology) and with Judith Steves-Long: The International handbook of adult development and wisdom, Oxford University Press.

Research interests

My major research interests are in the first place, wisdom and development of adult thinking. These fields of study are not well-known in Finland, though in all levels of adult education there is need of knowledge of these skills. Higher-order, complex development of adult thinking is one the most important 21th cntury skills. Also, wise decision-making is necessary in the increasingly complex world.
