During the New Students' Evening, there will be several different info stations set up in the main building's lobby area, which you are free to explore between 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. At the info stations, you will find the following organizations:

• 
  JYY is a student community that offers you support and assistance in your everyday life and studies through various services, ranging from housing to student events and advocacy. At JYY, we are here for you, ensuring that you get to enjoy the best student life in Jyväskylä.
   
• 
  Soihtu offers affordable and communal student housing in Jyväskylä. All housing locations of Soihtu are known for their services included in the rent and a strong sense of community. Soihtu is the business unit of the Student Union of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ JYY, meaning it is student-owned and primarily rents homes to students.
   
• 
  Koas (The Central Finland Student Housing Foundation) provides affordable and comfortable rental apartments for students in Jyväskylä. The foundation owns over 100 properties and nearly 4,000 apartments across the city.
   
• The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s Local Friendship Programme
  For 25 years, the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Local Friendship Programme has been opening doors to unique cultural experiences. It helps people make friends by bringing together local people (families, couples, or individuals) and international students who are studying for degrees at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.
   
• JYU Weekend Thesis Undertaking
  Weekend Thesis Undertaking (WTU) is a popular, interdisciplinary weekend organised twice a month for those Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ students who are working on their thesis. The event offers a positive and supportive working atmosphere, as well as peer pressure and peer support. A free breakfast and coffee/tea is provided for the participants.
   
• Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥
  It was here, in 1863, that Finnish­-language teacher education began. Since then, the dialogue between research, education and society has been our driving force.
   
• Researchers' Night
  Researchers' Night is an annual science event where researchers from all over Europe open their doors to anyone who is hungry for knowledge, from babies to grandparents. On Researchers' Night on September 26, 2025, at the campuses of universities in Jyväskylä, Oulu, Helsinki, and Hämeenlinna, you can enjoy science by experimenting, listening, and marveling. 
   
• FORTHEM
  The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is a member in the FORTHEM Alliance, which is a close network of nine European universities. Through this alliance, you can participate in student exchange programs, short-term mobility periods, or internships. You can also take part in various workshops and trainings, join the interdisciplinary expert groups, and attend virtual courses. Additionally, you have the opportunity to represent the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ in the FORTHEM Student Council and make sure that the student voice is heard in the collaboration.
   
• JYU's English-taught degree programmes
  Are you considering applying to an international bachelor's or master's degree programme at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥? Meet us at the New Students' Night to hear more about the English-taught degree programmes and the application process.

  ·¡»å³Ü´³²â±¹Ã¤²õ°ì²â±ôä is a unique center of expertise in learning, research, and development, which includes Jamk University of Applied Sciences(external), Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥(external), and the Jyväskylä Education Consortium Gradia(external). ·¡»å³Ü´³²â±¹Ã¤²õ°ì²â±ôä offers students diverse opportunities for flexible study paths and cross-studying, ensuring smooth transitions between different levels of education.

The history of the Student Union of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, or JYY, is naturally intertwined with the history of the university itself. Throughout its existence, JYY has played a significant role as a developer. The most notable projects have been the Ilokivi student building, completed in 1964–65 and still housing JYY’s office today, and the Kortepohja Student Village, construction of which began in 1968 and continues to this day.

JYY organizes events during the opening of the academic year. The program is free of charge and open to all members of the university community.

Speed Friending by JYY

Welcome to meet new people at the interdisciplinary Speed Friending organised by JYY on Tuesday 2.9. at Ilokivi Venue! Speed friending will take place in a bingo format, so it's okay if you can't make it to the beginning of the event. Speed friending is bilingual (Finnish and English) and you can decide in which language you want to meet new people. All university students are warmly welcome. The bar at Ilokivi Venue will be open during the whole event!  

The event is free of charge. No pre-registration required.

Pre-club: Jyrock 1985-2025

Finland's oldest indoor festival, Jyrock, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a free at Ilokivi Venue! Three exciting artists will take the stage during the evening: Rock Siltanen Group, Rehtori, and Viola. You can also buy advance tickets to Jyrock at the club. The Ilokivi Venue bar will be open all evening.

The event is free of charge. No pre-registration required. 
Cloakroom service 3€ per person. Please note the age limit K18.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ uses the eParking app. To make parking in the University area easier, be sure you have the eParking app in use. If you are a JYU student or staff member, login to the application with your Haka credentials. Visitor parking follows the street parking prices in the area.

Whether you are parking during chargeable hours or outside of them, you must always register your vehicle when parking in the area.

The venues for the Opening of the Academic Year are the Assembly Hall (C1-C2) in the Main Building (C), the Old Assembly Hall (S212) of the Seminarium (S), Old Forge (I) and Ilokivi Venue (ILO). The opening ceremony coffee reception will be held in the Lähde library building (B).You can find the venues on the campus map.

Parking for people with disabilities is free of charge in all parking areas on JYU campuses provided that the vehicle has a parking card for people with reduced mobility. There is no need to use the eParking application for parking provided that the vehicle has a parking card for people with reduced mobility.

In these cases, please use primarily a parking space marked with the wheelchair symbol. These spaces are usually close to the building’s main entrance.

Entrance to the Main Building's (C) Assembly Hall (C1-C2):
Guests using wheelchairs and other assistive devices can access the Assembly Hall by elevator, which is located on the 1st floor of the main building, near the cloakrooms. For any attending helpers with guests, there is seats reserved to the left of the hall, in the second row (2 seats). The guests to be assisted are requested to take places on the left side of the hall, close to the helpers seats.

Entrance to the Seminarium (S) Old Assembly Hall (S212):
Guests using wheelchairs or other assistive devices can access the Old Assembly Hall by elevator, located on the 1st floor of the Seminarium, near the Science Museum. There are no reserved seats in the space, feel free to take places.

Hearing loops will be in use during the events in the main building’s assembly hall. Hearing loop is also available on the old assembly hall on request, please let the event organisers know. Sign language interpretation is also available by ordering the service in advance.

Our university is a socially and culturally safe environment where harassment, inappropriate treatment, discrimination, or other inappropriate behaviour is not allowed. 
 
What is inappropriate treatment?  
 
Inappropriate treatment is negative behaviour that cannot be considered to be good manners. Inappropriate treatment can include making offensive comments, social isolation, gossiping, slandering, embarrassing comments, yelling, saying inappropriate things, unwarranted criticism, threatening behaviour, or unwarranted reminders of mistakes.    

Harassment may be directed at a person, for example, due to their age, skin colour, opinions, beliefs, sexuality, or gender. Offensive behaviour can take place with words, actions, or attitudes. Insinuations, inappropriate expressions and gestures, inappropriate touching, inappropriate contacts and rude speech are harassment. 
 
What should I do if I am treated inappropriately? 
 
• In a matter-of-fact manner, tell the person that the behaviour bothers you and ask them to stop this type of behaviour. 
• If you were not able to react in the situation straight away, you can also bring up the matter afterwards either verbally or in writing. 
• If you do not want to or are unable to point out the issue directly to the other person, you can contact the parties mentioned below.

Make sure that you can discuss the incident and the feelings related to it with a trusted party.

If you experience inappropriate treatment during the event, you can also talk to the staff working at the event. You can recognise the organisers and employees at the event by the JYU STAFF badges.  

Security is the responsibility of the whole university community. With our daily choices and actions each student and employee can influence the security of our community.
