Sign Language Interpreters

Interpreting is for all the participants of the situation.

In the Ģ��ֱ��, interpreting is carried out by four in-house sign language interpreters in cooperation with other interpreters and interpreting companies as needed.

We provide interpretation services in face-to-face and remote settings. In face-to-face situations, we position ourselves so that the participants can see and hear the interpretation without difficulty. In remote situations, we usually use Zoom.

We interpret simultaneously and our working languages are Finnish Sign Language, Finnish and English. We usually work in pairs and adhere to professional secrecy.

We prepare for interpreting assignments based on the materials provided by the participants. We do not distribute materials to others, and do not store them.

If the event is being recorded, recording of the interpretation must be agreed on in advance.

Information about interpretation

When you start your studies: if you have a legal right for interpretation and would like the University's interpreters to arrange interpretation for your studies, please contact tulkit@jyu.fi.

If you are continuing your studies, you will be sent instructions for the next academic year at the end of each spring term.

When booking an interpreter, remember:

make the booking for each course or event yourself
make the booking as soon as you know you will be attending
book interpretation also for SL courses when the teacher is hearing (the language of instruction can be Finnish, Finnish Sign Language or both).
update or cancel your order if necessary.

We will contact you and ask for preparation materials in advance. Slides, articles, recordings and links to websites are particularly useful. These materials are only for the use of interpreters and will be treated confidentially. We will delete the files at the end of the course.

If you upload materials to Moodle, we can retrieve them directly from there. Please add us to the course with the login tulkit(at)jyu.fi and give us teacher’s rights without editing rights. This way you can hide the materials from the students, but we still have access to them. Please also add us to the course’s email list.

When a lecture is given in a spoken language, we are positioned at the front of the hall facing the audience. This allows the sign language users in the audience follow the teaching, interpretation and, e.g., slides. For lectures given in a signed language, we position ourselves opposite to the teacher, with our backs to the audience.

You can lecture freely and at your own pace. If necessary, we will ask you to pause or ask for clarification. If you read aloud a written text slow down and pause. When you change the slide, give participants a moment to read the text before you continue.

If the event you are organising is to be interpreted, please contact tulkit@jyu.fi as soon as possible. We will find out whether we are responsible for interpreting the event or whether the interpreting should be booked from elsewhere. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about interpreting.

During your internship, you will be able to observe interpreted situations and get to know our work. However, the interpreting will be carried out by our interpreters. We plan the content of your internship period with you so that it meets your objectives. Please send your application and interpreting samples by e-mail to tulkit@jyu.fi and we will contact you.

Remote interpretations

For interpreted remote situations, we recommend the use of Zoom. Download the latest version of the app to your device to be able to use the necessary functions. In case the event is recorded, including the interpretation to the recording needs to be agreed on in advance with the interpreters. Usually, the interpretation is excluded from the recording.

Send the invitation link to: tulkit@jyu.fi. Please open the meeting room about 15 minutes before the start of the event so that we can check the settings together. We will keep one or two video screens open during the meeting.

Give interpreters and sign language users multi-pin rights. This allows each person to attach the necessary video screens to their view. The rights are assigned via the participant list: Participants -> participant name -> Allow to Multi-pin.

If the participants are divided into Breakout Rooms in advance, the interpreters need to be placed in the same group as the sign language users. If the groups are assigned randomly, the host will manually add the interpreters to the right group. Multi-pin permissions are lost when switching to Breakout Rooms and must be re-assigned when returning to the main room.

Alternatively, you can give the interpreters host rights, allowing them to manage Multi-pin and Breakout room functions themselves: Participants -> interpreter’s name or Interpreters JYU -> Make Co-Host.

If the network connection becomes overloaded, the video quality will not be sufficient for communication in sign language. In this case, only the speaker and the interpreters keep their video cameras on, and the participant using sign language opens their camera when taking their turn.

This is how you save the Zoom meeting on your computer, with the interpretation excluded from the recording view:

Turn on screen sharing.
You will now see a grid layout of the participants whose cameras are open. Pin your video (Pin video) and the videos of the participants you want to be visible on the recording (Add pin). Do not pin the videos of interpreters.
At the top of the video grid are four blue patterns of different sizes on a black background. The patterns appear when you move the cursor over the video grids. Select the second pattern from the left (Show small active speaker video).
Now you will only see the thumbnails of the video frames you have pinned, and the other videos will disappear from your view. Participants are still able to see all videos.
Start recording.
The recording captures the view you have on your screen at each stage of the meeting.

Note:

You will only see the video frames you have pinned. You will not see the other participants, even if one of them opens their camera in the middle of recording.
To see the videos of all participants, press the third blue frame from the left at the top of the attached video boxes.
