Please note that you must personally take care of that the estimated income limit is sufficient for the whole year. If the annual income limit is exceeded, the employer will withhold tax according to the additional rate. Therefore, please monitor your income during the year and request a new tax card before reaching the annual income limit.

For example, if you have arrived in Finland in the middle of a previous tax year or there have been changes in your income or other circumstances affecting taxation, you should apply for a revised tax card

• by calling the tax card .

When applying for a revised tax card in the beginning of a tax year or in the middle of a tax year, you need to have information on your monthly gross salary, holiday bonus percentage and amount of income earned and income taxes withheld so far during that tax year. You will find this information in your last pay slip.

How to estimate your annual income for the tax card for the whole new tax year (12 months):

• 12 x gross monthly salary = annual gross salary
• Calculate your holiday bonus using the 
  • Amount of holiday bonus months earned for the period of 01.04. -  31.03. x holiday bonus per one month = annual holiday bonus
  • Holiday bonus percentage is 4 % for the first year and 5 % for from one year to 15 years.

You don't have to send your new tax card to the university or our payroll if you have submitted us your Finnish personal identity code. The payroll receives the information automatically from the Tax Administration.  (JYU login required). You only need to make sure that your tax card information, including your income limit, is correct in the Tax Administration.

If you stay in Finland for more than six months, you will receive a pre-completed tax return from the Tax Administration each spring. This document summarizes your income, deductions, and other relevant financial information for the previous year.

Your task is to check the tax return and make corrections by the deadline if necessary. The deadline for making corrections is typically in May but you will see your specific deadline in the pre-completed tax return. If you need more time, you can request an extension.

After submitting your tax return, the Tax Administration assesses it and calculates your final tax liability or refund. They will send you a notice of assessment with the details.
