In Finland, taxation of earned income is progressive. This means that you pay a larger share of tax on a larger salary than on a smaller salary. You can estimate your progressive tax percentage with the tax office’s .
The tax rate indicates how much tax you pay on your income, and it is calculated separately for each person in Finland. If you come from abroad to work in Finland, your taxation is affected by how long you will stay in Finland and whether your employer is a Finnish or foreign company. For non-resident individuals occasionally working in Finland (less than 6 months is Finland), tax rates are 35% on employment income. In this case you do not need to submit the annual tax return.
If you are an employee staying in Finland for more than 6 months, you must personally take care of that the estimated income limit in your tax card is sufficient for the whole year. There are three figures on your tax card: a basic tax rate, an income limit, and an additional tax rate. If the annual income limit is exceeded, the employer will withhold tax according to the additional rate. Therefore, please monitor your income during the year and request a new tax card before reaching the annual income limit, see instructions: Employees: new tax card (revised tax card).
If you stay in Finland for more than 6 months, you are required to submit an annual tax return. See instructions: All tax residents: Annual tax return.
