Software engineering research seeks to solve practical problems

Engineering research is based on solving practical problems in new and innovative ways. IT solutions are often applied to the needs of other industries, but may also be based on entirely new software engineering constructions.

Research areas include software engineering, telecommunications, machine learning, and quantum programming and computing. The approach is typically constructive, meaning that the research almost always involves building complete systems whose properties can be examined from a practical point of view.

In addition to the IT skills themselves, knowledge of the application domain is also important, as research often applies technical solutions to a range of industries.
