The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ provides you with good opportunities to acquire the skills, competencies, and networks needed in working life during your studies, either through the core courses in your degree programme, optional studies, internship, and extracurricular activities in our university or through our collaborative networks, such as EduFutura and Forthem. 

The path starts with an orientation to studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and reaches beyond graduation in doctoral studies or with continuous learning studies at our JYU open university.  We hope you take an opportunity to integrate into the surrounding community and network with employers during your studies. Orientation into your new life at JYU

Please get to know us beforehand to create good conditions for successful studies and well-being. This will help you orient to your new life in Jyväskylä and Finland.


There is a lot of material online on the Finnish language and society that you can look at before arrival.

Studying at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ might differ greatly from your previous degree. Have a look at the academic study skills website to see what to expect from academic studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and in Finland and how you can develop these skills.

Don't forget to join us for the orientation days designed specifically for new students. This is a great opportunity to not only gather more information about studying at JYU but also to connect with your fellow students and start building your new community.

Building the base and gaining the knowledge, skills and competencies

Gain the knowledge, skills and competencies needed in working life during your studies. Take advantage of the various study possibilities provided by your programme and other JYU units and departments.

JYU working life studies enhance the knowledge and skills required in the workplace.

Finnish skills are important for integration, so continue developing your Finnish skills throughout your studies with the course selection from The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication, Movi. Do not settle for the minimum requirement of your degree programme.

Many English-taught Master’s degree programmes have mandatory English courses providing you with skills and competencies for the academic setting and working life. In addition, several optional English courses for gaining other essential skills needed in future working life are available at Movi.

Movi also offers various courses in several other languages, multicultural and multilingual communication, team and project work communication, great networking opportunities with other students, and more specialised skills and competencies.

To better understand Finnish society and how it operates, you can take courses on the subject.

Your degree programme provides you with fundamental knowledge of your field of study. Many courses have industry case studies, important working-life implications, and simulations.

Developing and enhancing your expertise

At JYU, you have the unique opportunity to develop and enhance your expertise, standing out with your JYUniqueness. Our diverse range of courses in working life, language, communication, project, and entrepreneurship, along with practical training during the internship period, will help you build your JYUniqueness, giving you a distinct advantage in the job market.

You can build your skills and competencies through practical training during the internship or in the multidisciplinary business project course Team&Client.  You can also develop your job application documents with our career specialist. In JYU's path to entrepreneurship, you can explore the possibility of starting your own business or developing your business ideas in business coaching.

Enhance your language repertoire and communications skills by developing your Finnish and English language skills even further, by studying new languages, multicultural and multilingual communication, and communication in team and project work.

Different study paths

Every study path is unique and influenced by the student's future goals. While each degree includes compulsory courses and requirements, students can select electives, optional studies, and other activities to tailor their studies and shape their career path. Please consult your program coordinator or study plan counselor for information about the options available. Here are a few examples of potential academic pathways.

  • Aiming for an academic career? If you're considering an academic career, you can get a head start by familiarising yourself with the tutorials and information-seeking courses offered by the on research data management. Research method courses within your master's degree programme or in your home faculty are also a great introduction to the world of research. Movi offers more specialised academic English courses focusing on, among other things, on and on .
     
  • Dreaming of entrepreneurship or self-employment? The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and its partner institutions offer various studies to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and coaching for new business ventures, such as or Language and communication courses on presentation skills, spoken and written communication can be beneficial when establishing and promoting your own ventures.   • Are you heading for a future in Finland? The multiple Finnish as a second language courses Movi offers are a good foundation for your future in Finland. In addition to language studies, networking with potential employers, the community, and students across the University is equally important. The courses on working life skills and extracurricular activities provide excellent networking opportunities. Besides knowledge, contacts and connections with Finnish working life are crucial. You can build these connections in Career Service's Team and Client course or during an internship.
     
  • Interested in international opportunities? The study context at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is international by nature, and the University prepares you for the world even further by offering a good network of international partners, providing you with numerous study possibilities in an international setting or by being international at home.  In order to operate in these surroudings brushing up on your language skills on Movi's language courses and / or developing your communication skills in a multilingual and multicultural setting are crucial for your success.  

After graduation

Continue developing your skills and competencies after graduation

  • After Master’s degree one can aim for a Doctoral studies: Doctoral studies.
  • You have the possibility to attend JYU courses after your graduation for some time.  This is a good opportunity to develop your language skills and field-specific expertise further: Study right for alumni studies.
  • JYU Open University offers offers courses in Finnish and in English from the faculties of the University as well as a wide range of general studies for anyone interested: Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ - Open University.
