English language studies at Movi

Our academic English programme is composed of faculty- and domain-specific courses in academic and professional literacies, interactive oral, written and research communication, as well as a wide variety of electives.

The academic English courses at Movi are meant for students to be able to complete the foreign language requirements of their degrees and to develop their English skills to meet the future challenges of internationalised working life.

Compulsory courses for degree students in the Finnish taught programmes

According to the statutes concerning university degrees in Finland, all higher education students must have adequate or good skills in one or two foreign language(s) to be able to update their professional expertise in their fields of study and operate successfully in an international work environment.

Different degree programmes have different requirements for the mandatory courses. See the information below to help guide you.

Bachelor-students

Finnish students who have studied English as their first foreign language before entering University continue to academic field-specific English in their Bachelor-studies

Multilingual communication and language studies (UVK)

Language specific courses for students who have prior studies in their major and/ or prior language courses (kielikohtaiset)

If you have prior studies, please check the degree requirements of your faculty to see what courses you need to take. Please also check if you need to take the UVK-path or if you can study language specific courses. If your previous degree specific English course is from another field than what you are currently studying at JYU, you must complement the previous course with a field specific supplementary module worth 1 ECTS (not applicable for degrees from the Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences). Master-students

Some Master-programmes have mandatory English courses in them. Please check the degree requirements of your faculty to see what courses you need to take.

Exemption from compulsory degree-specific courses

Exemption exams are intended as an option for students who already have already mastered the skills covered in the compulsory academic reading course or communication skills course. These exams are arranged a few times a year. Evaluation is based on the same criteria and scale as the courses, but in order to be exempted from either the communication skills course or the combined academic reading and communications skills course, you need to obtain at least a grade 4.

International and bilingual programmes and international students

To support you academically, each year we offer special courses which aim at polishing up your skills both for learning English and for learning through English - in other words, for developing academic English communication skills and for tuning up the study skills you will need to make the most of the instruction and assignments done through English. We also provide English courses focusing on working life communication skills and team work in multilingual and -cultural settings.

Many International and bilingual English taught Master's programmes require courses in academic research communication and thesis writing in English and/or working life communication skills and team work in multilingual and -cultural settings as compulsory component of the programme. Different programmes have different requirements, also same programmes might have different requirements depending on when you started your studies.

Language certificates

Movi instructors provide language certificates, if needed, exclusively to students of the Ģ��ֱ�� for the purposes of student exchange and mobility. The language certificate can only be provided when you have taken a language test at Movi.
