The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication - Movi organises beginner courses in Finnish and advanced courses in English for students at the start of their studies. These courses start in August before the regular semester teaching begins.

Early August language courses are held as contact teaching and you must be present at the start of the course in order to attend.

My Finnish primarily for the international degree students to JYU.

Advanced Summer Course in English for JYU degree as well as exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is B2-C1 (upper intermediate – advanced).
Intensive Summer Course in Academic English for exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1 (lower intermediate – intermediate).

Students must separately apply for these August courses with the instructions below and there is a limited number of places (exchange students: having these courses listed in your Learning Agreement is NOT enough, you must seprately apply). The courses are free of charge for the future students of Ģ��ֱ��. These Finnish courses and other English language courses will also be organised during the academic year:

Finnish courses

The aim of the course is to provide students with basic-level language skills that enable them to cope in simple everyday situations – using basic phrases and vocabulary – and talk about themselves and their surroundings. Students will practice speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and different language learning strategies. Finnish will be learned in meaningful contexts, and the course material, provided by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication, will be especially tailored for the international university students. Methods used in the course include pronunciation and listening exercises, conversation in small groups, language games, reading texts, written homework assignments, small tasks in Finnish on the Internet, and practicing the skills out in the real world. The My Finnish course is targeted primarily for the international degree students to JYU.

My Finnish is a mandatory course in most of the international degree programmes to non-native students who don’t have prior Finnish studies. The course is organized regularly during your studies but only this version starts prior to the orientation programme and other courses, giving you an excellent opportunity to focus your full attention to your Finnish language studies in the beginning. Students with prior Finnish studies are encouraged to continue with the more advanced Finnish courses organised during the academic year in order to meet the possible programme criteria for the Finnish courses. The course will run as intensive contact teaching on the first weeks 11-22.8.2025 (Mon-Fri) and resume a less frequent schedule after the orientation week with teaching on Tuesdays 14-16 and Fridays 10-12.

NB. It is not possible to take other intensive courses in August alongside My Finnish course because of the work load and conflicting schedules. My Finnish course is targeted primarily for the international degree students to JYU.

The aim of the course is in receptive skills in particular. You will learn to understand simple everyday Finnish in written and spoken form (e.g. signs, advertisements, announcements) and produce very simple everyday phrases in everyday situations (e.g. greetings). The course will introduce some basic facts about Finnish language and its characteristics and provide simple strategies to help you to learn more Finnish, to understand basic vocabulary and simple sentences in written and in spoken form and to use Finnish in simple everyday situations (e.g. saying thank you, ordering something). The Survival Finnish course is targeted for the international exchange and visiting students to JYU.

It is possible to take both Survival Finnish and XENX040 Intensive Summer Course in Academic English (level A2-B1) OR XENX1001 Advanced Summer Course in English (level B2-C1) as the courses do not overlap, but keep in mind that the workload will be considerable.

The Advanced Summer Course in English (40 contact hours, 4 ECTS credits) is arranged in August by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication - Movi. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the Ģ��ֱ��. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at upper intermediate – advanced level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions. Typical tasks include reading, discussions and evaluating information as well as writing a critical text and presenting and leading a discussion on a field-specific topic following academic conventions. The course is targeted at JYU degree as well as exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is B2-C1 (upper intermediate – advanced).

Do you feel that you know English grammar quite well and are good at reading and writing, but have not had enough opportunities to practice speaking in English? As an exchange student at the Ģ��ֱ��, oral skills play an important role in the teaching and help you to develop your academic skills.

In this course you have a chance to develop your speaking skills whilst ensuring that your other skills are also at the level required to study at the university. We will practise speaking in a number of different situations, starting small and increasing the level of difficulty as your skills and confidence grow.

This two-week intensive preparatory course in academic English (40 hours of in-person teaching, 4 ECTS credits) is arranged in August by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication - Movi. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the Ģ��ֱ��. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at lower intermediate – intermediate level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions and focus on general academic study skills needed in studying here at the Ģ��ֱ��. Typical tasks include reading, listening and speaking exercises, finding and evaluating information, writing an essay and leading a class discussion. The course is targeted at exchange and visiting students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1.
