Internationalisation skills needed in working life can also be developed on your own campus and city. For example, by completing studies in a foreign language, becoming a tutor for foreign students, taking online classes, or participating in activities of international organisations.

Courses and study modules in foreign languages

All faculties offer studies in English , and students of JYU as well as international students have the opportunity to participate in these courses. You can either choose individual courses or apply to international master's programmes after completing your Bachelor's degree.

International research groups

You can gain invaluable international experience through research groups by joining them through your department or faculty. At the same time, you can create networks in your own field. For more information about research groups, contact the teacher responsible for your field of study.

Language and Culture courses at Movi

Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) offers students language studies in many languages as well as language and culture study modules. Movi prepares you for today’s working life, in which versatile communication and language skills are essential. These are also skills you will need during your studies. See the communication and language courses that Movi offers for all students.

You can also learn languages informally with other students at the university. The idea behind the Each One Teach One (EOTO) -the programme is that you can teach a language you know well to a student from another country, and the student can teach you their native language. You can earn ECTS credit by participating in the EOTO programme.

Nowadays, in almost every field, it is necessary to know how to act and work in multilingual and multicultural environments, while appreciating others and building common understanding. Academic experts are expected to have flexibility and multilingual interaction skills. You can develop this expertise at Movi.

Certificate in Multilingual Intercultural Competence

Multilingual Intercultural Competence (MIC) offers degree and exchange students at the Ģ��ֱ�� the chance to invest in the development of their internationalization capabilities and demonstrate their competence.

MIC is a certificate of studies placed in different parts of the student's degree, which in one way or another strengthens the student's cultural competence and internationalization capabilities. MIC combines studies completed in the form of courses run by the Ģ��ֱ��’s Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi), in subject departments and as an exchange student, for instance.

Distance learning

Many higher education institutions offer lectures online (MOOC = Massive Open Online Course). Entire study modules, courses, and degrees can be completed remotely. However, it is important to do background research on the education provider before committing to paid online studies. The Digital Academy of the FORTHEM alliance, of which the Ģ��ֱ�� is a member, offers language studies, MOOCs, and other various online courses. It is possible to include completed studies as part of your studies. You can log in to FORTHEM Digital Academy through your university's Moodle.

Exchange tutoring

Acting as a tutor for international exchange and visiting students is an excellent way to establish contact with students (inside and outside of your study field) from all over the globe, improve language skills, and gain experience in guiding a multicultural group. Applications for the position of exchange tutor are submitted twice a year and all tutors receive training. Students who have studied at JYU for at least 1 year by the time tutoring starts can apply. You can earn 2 credits as a tutor for exchange students (one-time-only).

The International Office recruits exchange tutors from all study fields. Tutors' task is to acquaint a group of international exchange students with the system of studies and campus life in Jyväskylä in addition to helping with different sorts of practical matters. All tasks of the tutors are thoroughly covered in the mandatory tutor training.

Each tutor coordinates a group of 4-7 international exchange students called tutees. The main task of a tutor is to help tutees settle in a new country, city, and university. This means:

communicating with tutees before, during, and after their arrival
meeting tutees upon their arrival and accompanying them to their student apartment
organizing campus, library, and city tours
showing students how to register for courses
helping with services within and outside the campus area (international office, student services, student union, DVV, Migri, banks, etc.)

Tutors are expected to be present in Jyväskylä and ready for tutoring on the recommended arrival date. The orientation programme for exchange students typically takes place before the teaching starts (spring: first and second week of January, autumn: last week of August). The main tasks of a tutor normally last for a month after students' arrival.

Tutors are compensated for their work and first-time exchange tutors can also get 2 ECTS. Tutors are paid 14 euros per hour for up to 30 hours. The payment is taxable income.

Exchange tutors are requited twice a year. For autumn, tutors are requited around January and February. For spring, tutors are requited around October.

Degree tutoring

Please note that the next application round for degree tutors will be at the beginning of next year, in 2025.

Acting as a tutor for international degree students is an excellent way to establish contact with students in your degree programme from all over the globe, improve language skills, and gain experience in guiding a multicultural group. Applications for the position of degree-tutor are submitted once a year and all tutors receive training. Students who have studied at least 1 year at JYU can apply to become degree tutors. You can earn 2 credits for the first time you work as a degree tutor.

Degree tutoring is based on small groups, where the students from previous cohorts of the same degree will give new students starting in the same programme the necessary information needed to start their studies. The tutor group will offer its members an opportunity to socialize and become part of the student community, as well as to form supporting relationships among peers. Tutors' task also include acquainting their tutees with the system of studies and campus life in Jyväskylä. Degree tutors also offer arrival services and guidance in official matters to international degree students.

All tasks of the tutors are thoroughly covered in the training.

Degree tutors will be selected firstly from students within the same degree programme. But can also be students from a different programme within the faculty/department.

Each tutor coordinates a group of a maximum of 10 students (Finnish and international) starting in the same degree programme. One of the main tasks of a degree tutor is to promote grouping of their tutees and help international degree students with matters related to their arrival in a new country, city, and university. The tutor will also:

contact and advise students in their tutor group before arrival
pick up international degree students from Jyväskylä Travel Centre and accompany them to their apartment. The tutor picks up the keys to the student's apartment in advance if needed/applicable.
help international students with administrative matters (banking, Digital and Population Data Services Agency and such).
support tutees at the beginning of their studies (showing how to get to the orientation, library and campus tours and such) and organise free time activies.

Degree tutors are expected to be present in Jyväskylä starting on the recommended arrival date (usually Friday before orientation week) for international degree students. The orientation programme takes place during the week before teaching starts (usually the last week of August). The main tasks of a tutor normally tend to concentrate at the beginning of the semester, but tutoring does not end after the orientation and continues in the following weeks as well.

The tutors are paid a reward for their work and new tutors can get 2 ECTS. Degreetutors are paid 14 euros per hour for up to 45 hours. The payment is taxable income.

If you would like to become a tutor for degree students, fill out the application form during the application period. The application period is usually around January and February.

You can apply for all tutoring on the same form (Tutoring for Finnish speaking programmes, tutoring for international exchange and visiting students, degree tutoring). You can apply for more than one kind of tutoring, but you can only be selected for one.

Erasmus Student Network

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) organizes various activities such as trips, excursions, and theme nights for Finnish and international students. As an active member of the organisation, you get to work in an international group and get to know international students through diverse activities.

IDESCO gives the international degree student community a voice. IDESCO organizes events for International and Finnish students to connect and mediate with International students in various situations.

AIESEC provides opportunities for international cooperation and networking on your home campus. It is also possible to do an internship abroad through AIESEC.

At Paremmin Yhdessä ry, you can for example take part in multicultural buddy activities, offer support for adult immigrants in studying and homework and assist in learning Finnish.
