Internal communication channels

The Graduate School of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has an e-mail list of the entire university's doctoral students, to which the graduate school sends announcements. All doctoral students registered to attend are automatically included in the list.

Faculties, departments or subjects may have their own e-mail lists for doctoral students, or doctoral students may be added to the staff's e-mail list. Faculties, departments or subjects can also have, for example, their own Teams groups for doctoral students. Ask your supervisors for more information on these and any other important email lists and groups. In addition, additional information about the activities and practices of your own faculty/department can be found on the units' own intranet pages.

University community

During doctoral studies, doctoral students can participate in various events and activities at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ according to their own interests. Remember to ask about the events of your own subject, department and/or faculty, for example, from your supervisor. Please note that some of the activities can only be offered to those employed by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

Learn Finnish language

Finnish studies are useful when you live in Finland: everyday life and studies are easier if you know the language and culture of the country. If you plan to stay in Finland for work and to live, Finnish language skills will improve your chances in the job market and make your daily life easier.

Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication Movi offers Finnish as a second language studies also for doctoral students.

Kielibuusti is a free of charge information platform and resource bank for learning Finnish. The website is produced with the support from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Wellbeing, health care and safety

Training and activities related to wellbeing

The University organises staff training, which is coordinated by HR services. All JYU members, including all doctoral students, are welcome as long as there is still room within the maximum number of participants set for the event. Admission to some staff training has to be separately applied for. Then the announced admission criteria are used for selecting the participants.

Services for wellbeing skills development

Self study material and online courses to develop your wellbeing skills as well as information about mental wellbeing services are available at Uno Staff Portal. JYU offers Staff Compass and a low-threshold online mental wellbeing service Auntie to all JYU members, also to all doctoral students. Staff Compass and Autie are available both in Finnish and in English.

In addition to the services offered by the University, trade unions representing researchers and Mela, the provider of pensions insurance for recipients of scientific grants, support the occupational wellbeing of their members and customers.

Academic Sports

Doctoral students currently registered for attendance at JYU have the right to participate in the Academic Sports (in cluding sports for JYU staff) as per the price list of Academic Sports. The right to participate can be verified with a student card, a registration certificate or a grant researcher's ID card.

More information about taking care of physical wellbeing is available in Uno Staff Portal.

Health care services

Doctoral students are not entitled to use the student health services of FSHS (YTHS).

Most University staff members are eligible for occupational health care services. University's occupational health care is not available for grant researchers or other doctoral students, who are not University staff members.

Grant researchers and other doctoral students, who are not University staff members, can use the public or private health care services.

You can receive the healthcare insurance offered by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ if you have a research grant for at least one year and an agreement for using the facilities and equipment of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ for research. You live and work in Finland and you do not have an employment relationship or occupational healthcare elsewhere.  The insurance is voluntary to our grant researchers and it does not include a deductible.

Support for wellbeing and mental health is also available outside the university. You can find out more about the services available outside the university by following the link below; however, please note that FSHS services are not available to doctoral students.

Misconduct, bullying and harassment

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is a diverse and accepting community. All cooperation is based on respect and appreciation for other university members. Above all, each university member is responsible for their own actions as part of the work community.

If you feel that you have been treated in a way that is contrary to good manners, you should seek to resolve the situation as soon as possible. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has guidelines on how to deal with the matter in different situations: for situations involving inappropriate behaviour by a non-employed student and for situations involving inappropriate behaviour by an staff member.

University chaplain

The university chaplain is available for university students. You can discuss matters that weigh on your mind or any other issues with the university chaplain. These conversations are confidential and free of charge.
