Accidents occurring while studying as a JYU degree student

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has statutory accident insurance for its students based on the law about compensating for accidents occurring while studying (460/2015). This cover applies to the JYU degree students and only accidents taking place during practical teaching and training are covered. Exchange students studying at JYU are not covered by this insurance. Unpaid interns working at JYU are covered by accident insurance. The insurance company of the JYU is Protector.

Accidents in a practical training period will be compensated for when they take place during:

  • practical teaching within a school, as well as
  • unpaid practical training period taking place within a workplace outside the school.

Accidents taking place during trips to and from the practical training are also covered by insurance.

In case the student is paid for the practical training, they are covered by the employer’s accident insurance.

What to do in case of an accident?

  • Notify your teacher immediately.
  • Get medical treatment, for example, at  (FSHS, in Finnish YTHS), public health centers, or private health services. Please note that the insurance company may refuse your accident claim which would mean that you have to pay for the medical costs yourself afterward. For more expensive medical examinations the insurance company may grant separate permission based on the notice of injury.
  • Submit the insurance company details (Protector, insurance number 649875) to the Finnish Student Health Service or other medical institution in question.

    • Employer information:

    • Description of what has happened: Describe here the circumstances where the injury/accident took place including your degree, the faculty where you study, your study year, your major, and the course during which the injury happened, and explain how the course belongs to your degree.
    • Attach the needed documentation to the form. If not attached, send the original documents related to the accident (e.g., the receipts of the medical examinations you have paid for) either by email to vahingot@protectorvakuutus.fi or by postal to the following address: Protector Vakuutus, Kalevankatu 13 A, 00100 Helsinki

Protector, the insurance company, emails the compensation decision directly to you. If the decision is negative, you may make a claim for rectification to Protector.

Obtain insurance

All students studying at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ are responsible for obtaining their own insurance. You should acquire your own health, accident and travel insurance before coming to Finland. If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA/EFTA country, you must acquire a European Health Insurance Card from your national health insurance provider.

EU/EEA citizens

If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you must acquire a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from the local social security office in your home country before coming to Finland. The European Health Insurance Card entitles the holder to health care under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in Finland.

However, please note that the European Health Insurance Card is, by no means, a substitute for travel insurance nor does it cover any unexpected expenses (e.g., repatriation, medical transport, or damage to personal belongings). For this reason, we recommend obtaining also private health and travel insurance.

For more information, please see

Students from outside the EU/EEA

If you come from outside the EU or EEA, you are required to have private medical insurance:

  • If the duration of studies is less than two years, the student must have private insurance, which primarily covers the costs of medical treatment up to EUR 120,000.
  • If the duration of studies is two years or more, the student must apply for home municipality in Finland at . After getting it, the student is entitled to municipal health care services at the same price as local residents. In such cases, it is sufficient for the insurance to primarily cover pharmaceutical expenses up to EUR 40,000.

You are required to have insurance coverage when applying for a residence permit. The residence permit cannot be granted without insurance.

For more information, please see .

Students from Great Britain and Northern Ireland

If you have social security coverage in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, you may provide a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for accessing Finnish healthcare services.
