About preparing the doctoral study plan
The making of the doctoral study plan is guided by the curriculum and the career goals of the doctoral student.
The doctoral student must create a doctoral study plan in the Sisu system immediately after the doctoral study right begins. In addition, the doctoral student must expand their study plan with their supervisor(s) within six months from the beginning of the study right. After that, the doctoral student must inform the faculty's doctoral studies coordinator that the doctoral study plan can be checked in Sisu.
The doctoral student independently, and with the supervisors, follows the fulfillment of the doctoral study plan. The plan should be updated when necessary. Changes made in the doctoral study plan during doctoral studies are approved by the supervisor-in-charge. You can ask the faculty's doctoral studies coordinator for advice on problematic situations.
Which courses and study attainments are suitable for doctoral studies
It is worth remembering that not all studies commensurate with the curriculum are compulsory or even possible to be completed by enrolling to a course. So always look in the curriculum what studies you need to do and what are the possible completion methods, and then choose a completion method that works for you.
If you can and want to complete a course as contact teaching (course, seminar, etc.), remember to make sure it is possible for you to enrol to the course. Not all teaching offered at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is open for all students. Instead, enrolling for some studies requires certain types of study rights. So keep in mind that if, for example, you search for different courses in the Sisu system with just keywords, you may get many different levels of studies organized by different faculties in the search results and it is most likely that you may not be eligible to enroll to those. In addition, possibility to participate in some courses or training may depend on whether the doctoral student is a JYU staff member or not.
Also, be sure to consider that the level of the courses and study attainments is appropriate. As a general rule, courses and study attainments should be at doctoral level courses (or at the level of master's studies, i.e advanced studies). However, it is possible to deviate from this in special occasions (for example, working life skills studies or language studies), for more information contact faculty's doctoral studies coordinator via .
Studies recommended to be taken right at the beginning of doctoral studies
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences organizes an info session for new doctoral students 1-2 times a year (usually at the beginning of the semester). You should participate in the event as soon as possible after your right to doctoral studies as started.
At the very beginning of the studies, it is also worth getting acquainted with many issues that are important for the dissertation and doctoral studies. Such are, for example
- research ethics
- data protection: JYU's data privacy pages
-
- research methods: read more, for example, in the , on the or From the SAGE Research Methods Online methodology library (available through JYKDOK).
NOTE: especially at the beginning of studies - but also during studies - it is important to plan and schedule the completion of both the dissertation and other studies. Your supervisors will help you with this, especially the supervisor-in-charge, who will support you in planning and scheduling your studies.
How to get the credits submitted to the student register
- Courses, seminars and similar study attainments which are organised by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and to which you have enrolled via Sisu system: teacher responsible for the study module submits the credits to the register. Registration comes with the code with which the course, etc. is in Sisu. The code is not changed afterwards. Remember that the study module in question must be entered in your Sisu study plan before receiving the credits!
- Courses, seminars and similar study attainments which are organised by some other educational institute (not Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥): apply for recognition of prior learning in Sisu. If necessary, also read the general recognition of prior learning instructions of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. If necessary, you can ask the coordinator responsible for the faculty's doctoral studies about, for example, the type of application.
- Other competencies (e.g. conference presentations, scientific publications, teaching experience, editorial experience, etc.): the doctoral student sends the necessary information about their performance to the supervisor-in-charge. The supervisor-in-charge evaluates the applicability of the performance as part of doctoral studies. If it is is acceptable, the supervisor-in-charge will send information about the performance to the coordinator responsible for the faculty's doctoral studies. The notification must include information on the basis of performance (what, when, in which language the performance was made and other necessary information), the number of credits to be awarded and a possible code/codes for which the performance can be recorded. If additional information is needed to record the performance, the coordinator responsible for the faculty's doctoral studies will ask the supervisor-in-charge and/or doctoral student for it.
Checking the overall situation regarding the study credits and compiling the doctoral studies
A doctoral student can always, if necessary, ask the doctoral studies coordinator to check the overall situation regarding the study credits and if there are any studies that are still missing.
All credits must be completed at the stage when the doctoral student applies for the degree. Therefore, not all performances need to be in the register, for example, at the stage when the dissertation manuscript goes to preliminary examination. When the faculty decides on the preliminary examiners of the dissertation, the coordinator responsible for the faculty's doctoral studies checks the overall situation of regarding the study credits and informs the doctoral student and the supervisor-in-charge. After this, the doctoral student still has time until applying for the degree to complete any missing studies.
At the point when the doctoral student has completed all the studies required by the curriculum and does not intend to complete any more, the doctoral student can ask for the compiling of the doctoral study credits (evaluation of the study module) in Sisu system. This is done at the latest when the doctoral student applies for a degree, but it can also be done earlier during doctoral studies.
