Instructions for applying for recognition of prior learning

On this page you will find instructions on how to apply for recognition of prior learning or competence. Credit can either be substitution or inclusion.

Table of contents

General information

Recognition of prior learning (sometimes referred to as RPL or AHOT) refers to the process of approving previous studies, work experience or other competences as part of your degree. Recognition of prior learning may take the form of substitution or inclusion.

  • Substitution means that prior knowledge or skills are used to replace a study unit at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Substitution
requires equivalence between contents, and studies can be substituted fully or partially.
  • Inclusion means that prior competence is accepted as part of the degree as such, in which case equivalence between contents is not required, but the studies must meet the level of curriculum and correspond to the expertise required by the degree.

The possibilities for recognition of prior learning are handled when creating the student’s personal study plan (HOPS) and are discussed primarily with the HOPS supervisor. This ensures that substitutions are considered in personal study plans. It is recommended to apply for recognition of prior learning in good time before the start of studies to be substituted. It is not possible to replace a course already completed with another corresponding course at a later date.

Within a degree, you cannot have the same course content, meaning that if you have already completed a particular course, a course with the same content cannot be accepted. Studies included in a Bachelor's degree cannot be accepted for a Master's degree. Read more about the principles for recognition of prior learning at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥:

Learning acquired in formal education in Finland or outside Finland

It is possible to apply for recognition of Bachelor's and Master's degree studies with studies completed at another higher education institution in Finland or abroad. The studies to be recognised must be university-level.

If you have completed a course with equivalent content according to the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ curriculum, you can apply for a substitution. Please note that you must have the right to studies for which you are applying for a substitution.

If you want your studies from elsewhere to be recognised as such, for example as part of your degree's elective studies, apply for inclusion.

If you have completed studies at the JYU Open University, your studies will be transferred from the Open University's register to the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s register, so you do not need to apply for recognition.

For more detailed instructions on how to have your exchange studies recognised, see the guidelines for student exchange.

Before applying, please check the Further instructions menu at the bottom of this page for any additional information.

If you are applying for inclusion, you will need to make a separate inclusion application for each individual course. If you have completed a study module, apply for inclusion of the module as a whole, not as individual study units within the module. One application is therefore sufficient.

You will need to attach a transcript of records or a certificate of studies to your application. The attachment must contain details of the studies you have completed: scope, date of completion and grade. If you are applying for the inclusion of a study module, please ensure that the transcript of records contains information on the completion of the module, i.e. that the courses included in the module have been combined into a study module and an overall grade has been given.

In the My Studyinfo (Oma Opintopolku) srvice, you can also see all your studies completed in Finland. In the recognition application done in Sisu, you can include a link to your own study details from the My Studyinfo. You can also attach a printout or a screenshot to your application. In this case, please make sure that your name and the details of your studies, such as grades, date of completion and number of credits for the course, are displayed.

Learning acquired outside formal education

Please familiarise yourself with the principles for recognition of prior learning at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and look for any additional information from the Further instructions menu below. Apply for recognition of prior learning in SISU.

Recognition of Communication and Language Studies

If you have completed communication and language studies in another higher education institution equivalent to the required studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, you can apply for recognition of these studies. It is also possible to seek recognition for equivalent elective communication and language courses. The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) is responsible for handling the recognition process for communication and language studies. Please familiarise yourself with the principles of recognition for communication and language studies.

Recognition of prior learning in doctoral studies

If you have completed doctoral studies elsewhere than at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, you can apply for recognition of prior learning.

Credits from university positions of trust

2 credits may be awarded for each of the following positions of trust:

  • at least one year in an official JYU governing body (University Collegium, University Board, Faculty Council, Education Council)
  • at least one year in the board of a subject association
  • at least one year in a position of trust in the Student Union (as a member of the Council of Representatives or the Board, or as chairperson of a committee or a division)
  • at least one year in the university's study aid committee, in an official working group of the university, faculty or department (e.g., curriculum working group of the faculty, examination board)

A maximum of 8 credits may be awarded to a student in a position of trust. As a general rule, credit is only received for serving as a full member of an institution, unless the workload of the deputy has been equivalent to that of a full member. Credit may be awarded only once for holding the same position of trust.

In order to receive credits, the student must have actively taken part in a position of trust. To receive credits, the student must prepare a report (1-2 pages) no later than one year after the end of the term. The report must include: 1) name and contact details 2) the tasks the report pertains to and the timeframe during which these tasks were carried out 3) a detailed description of the content of the tasks 4) how previous expertise has been utilised in performing the tasks and what has been learned while performing them. It is good to reflect on the learning in relation to the learning outcomes of the course JYUM007 Positions of Trust.

If a student has several positions of trust, the descriptions of the different positions of trust can be included in the same report, but for the sake of clarity, they should be described separately in the report.

For positions of trust, you do not need to submit a recognition application in Sisu. Instead, the credits are recorded based on the report and a certificate. The credits are awarded for the courseJYUM007-JYUM010 Positions of Trust, which is worth 2 credits. The report is returned to your programme's education coordinator by email.

The credit awarded for the trust positions can be placed in either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. As a general rule, it is counted as part of the other, freely elective studies of the degree.
