Recognition of prior learning

Guides for requesting recognition of prior learning (RPL, AHOT) in Sisu

Table of contents

1. Requesting recognition of prior learning in Sisu

Recognition of prior learning can either be applied through substitution or inclusion. NOTE! A granted RPL attainment will always be attached to the study right through which it was applied for. If you have more than one study right, apply for recognition of prior learning through the study plan to which you wish to place your attainment to.

NOTE! Sisu does not send email notifications regarding the handling of applications. Log in to Sisu in order to be notified whether your application has been returned due to missing information, or if it has been handled.

Substitution

Substitution means substituting a course in the Univeristy of Jyväskylä curricula with prior studies or other experience gained outside the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Substitutions are registered course by course. In order to apply for credit transfer the course you wish to substitute has to be included in your study plan.

Substitution can be requested on the course brochure's Equivalences and Subsitutions tab. Click the Go to application button under Equivalences and Subsitutions to start.

Substitution

Start by adding the information of the substituting studies or other prior learning by clicking the blue Add information on studies or other prior learning bar.

Substitution

If you are applying for credit transfer for studies completed at another institution select Completed studies. If you are applying for credit transfer for example experience from work or hobbies, select Other prior learning

Fill in the details of the application as carefully as possible. The fields marked by an asterisk are compulsory. In the Description field you should include for example a link to, or a description of the completed course. If you are applying for a substitution based on several completed courses you can add the information of the other course(s) by clicking the Add information on studies or other prior learning bar again.

Include a signed or certified copy of a transcript or certificate of study under Attachments and Choose files. If the attainment in question is through other prior learning, attach a document with proof of your learning, for example a signed statement. You can attach several files under one application.

After all the required information is filled in, clicking Continue lets you see an overview of the application before sending. Here it is also possible to select if you want the decision delivered to you through Sisu or on paper by mail. If your application is accepted the completed course is registered immediately after handling the application. After submitting you can find and view your applications from My profile under Applications and decisions.

Inclusion

Inclusion means including prior studies or other experience gained outside the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ to your degree without substituting existing content in the curriculum. This can be individual courses or study modules that do not have an equivalence in the curricula of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. Inclusion can be applied for in two ways: through a study draft or from the three dot menu at the upper right hand corner of your study plan.

A study draft is useful if you plan to complete studies in the future, and wish to have them visible in your study plan beforehand. Once you have completed these studies you can apply to have those studies included in your degree via the study draft.

RPL Inclusion

NOTE! A granted RPL attainment will always be attached to the study right through which it was applied for. If you have more than one study right, apply for recognition of prior learning through the study plan to which you wish to place your attainment to.

However if you have already completed the studies you wish to include, you can access the application through the three dot menu by clicking Request to have prior learning included in your degree.

If you are requesting an inclusion through the study plan and not a study draft, the first thing you need for the application is to decide which part of your study plan you wish to include the attainment. If you are requesting an inclusion through a study draft, the attainment will be placed where the study draft is.

Start by adding the information of the substituting studies or other prior learning by clicking the blue Add information on studies or other prior learning bar.

If you are applying for credit transfer for studies completed at another institution select Completed studies. If you are applying for credit transfer for example experience from work or hobbies, select Other prior learning.

Once your inclusion application has been accepted, you must retrieve the included course into your Study Plan. Go to your Structure of Studies and click on the blue Add to the plan button on the left-hand side. Then click the arrow-shaped Add to plan button.

Custom course credits

Custom credits are attainments completed at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ that have been personally agreed upon with a teacher or guidance counselor, and that do not substitute for any existing courses. Custom course credits can be used in rare occasions for example to fill in learning requirements for study modules, or for personalised attainments in the case of doctoral studies. The requesting and granting of custom course credits is always agreed upon and instructed case by case.

2. Supplementing an RPL-application

You can add attachments to your application for as long as your application status is "Requested", and it is not yet being handled. If the application handling is in progress, the handler can also return the application to the student for supplementing in case there are missing details or information. A returned application will include grounds for why it was returned. If the application has been returned, all previously added information can be edited, including the attached files.

If an application has been returned for supplementing, the yellow notification banner will show the grounds for returning the application, and what needs to be added.

Supplementing application

NOTE! Sisu does not send email notifications regarding the handling of applications. Log in to Sisu in order to be notified whether your application has been returned due to missing information, or if it has been handled.

3. Placing an RPL attainment to your study plan

A granted RPL attainment will always be attached to the study right through which it was applied for. If you have more than one study right, apply for recognition of prior learning through the study plan to which you wish to place your attainment to.

Substitution and study draft

A substitution that has been applied for and granted through a course in the curriculum will automatically replace the original course in the study plan. Additionally an RPL attainment applied for and granted through a study draft in the plan will replace the original draft in the study plan. Substitution or inclusion applied through a study draft do not need to be placed into the study plan separately.

Inclusion and custom course credits

Attainments granted through inclusion or as custom course credits appear in the blue Add to the plan panel at the left side of the study plan page. Note that a granted RPL attainment will always be attached to the study right through which it was applied for. Thus the attainment is only visible in the study plan through which it was applied for, or another study plan corresponding to the same education unless the attainment's link to a study right is changed in study administration.

The attainment has a code generated by Sisu. By clicking the blue arrow in the Add to the plan tool on the left side of the study plan page Sisu will automatically suggest any parts of the study plan structure that accept freely selected courses. These can be any elective or optional categories.

Add to studyplan

If the structure has multiple parts where courses can be added freely, you can change the spot by clicking the Add here button next to another headline. Finally the selection is confirmed by clicking Confirm in the selection assistant on the right side of the page.

Add to studyplan

If the attainment needs to be a part of a predefined structure that does not normally allow for freely selected courses, the use of free edit mode is required.

Changing an RPL attainment into a module

If you have attainments that have been registered as courses, but in reality are modules comprised of several courses, this attainment should be converted into a module attainment in order to make it visible as a completed module on your diploma. In these cases contact the .

Once the attainment has been converted, it is placed into the study plan's optional study modules by clicking this headline (text, not the arrow in front of the headline text) and selecting Free edit mode from the three dot menu of the upper right corner of the selection assistant that opens on the right side of the page. From here select "Add a study module you have already completed" and add your attainment. After this you can exit free edit mode.

If the RPL module replaces a compulsory module in your degree structure, you need to access free edit mode on the headline under which the module you wish to replace is located (usually the first level of the degree structure or specialization). Start using free edit mode by clicking the three dot menu of the upper right corner of the selection assistant that opens on the right side of the page. Remove the compulsory module you wish to replace, and add your completed RPL attainment ("Add a study module you have already completed"). You need to apply for approval for this by clicking the blue button at the top of the free edit mode selection assistant. Once this exception to the structure is approved, your study plan will once again follow the rules of the degree structure.

4. I can't find or place my attainment into the right study plan

A granted RPL attainment will always be attached to the study right through which it was applied for. If you have more than one study right, apply for recognition of prior learning through the study plan to which you wish to place your attainment to.

The link between an attainment and a study right may need to be changed for example if

  • the RPL request was made through the wrong education/study plan
  • you change your study right from one education to another
  • you receive a new study right to which you wish to move some if not all of your RPL attainments

If an RPL attainment is not visible in the blue Add to the plan panel at the left side of the Structure of studies page or it cannot be placed into the study plan through free edit mode either as a completed course or module (or it is only possible to place in a study plan of another education than the one you would wish to), contact the .

5. Changing an RPL attainment from one study right to another

If you receive a new study right to another education or you have requested for prior learning through the wrong study plan, contact your faculty/department study administration in order to transfer your RPL attainments to the right education and to be able to place them into the right study plan.

6. Cross-institutional studies and RPL

If you have registered for the teaching through the cross-study service channel (RIPA), you do not apply for RPL. If there is a problem with transferring the credits, contact the destination university. Do not send substitution applications for study courses at other Sisu universities. Substitution is applied for a course at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ with competence from another higher education institution, unless it is a study distributed through a service channel, in which case there is no need for RPL.

Study modules in cross-study service channel

As long as the cross-study service channel does not transport assembled study modules, the student applies for inclusion after receiving the assembly, which is converted into a module at the interface. In the same context, the individual courses transferred via the service channel are attached to the modules.
