Doctoral School of the Faculty of Information Technology

The Faculty of Information Technology at the Ģֱ is the first and largest university level IT research unit in Finland. The Faculty conducts internationally high-level research and trains experts for society's needs.

In the Doctoral Programme in Information Technology, you can study in five different specialisation options and graduate either as a Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration), or Doctor of Science (Technology).

Doctoral degree consists of a doctoral dissertation and postgraduate studies

Doctoral dissertation

The doctoral dissertation represents the student’s ability to independently and critically apply scientific research methods and create new scientific knowledge. The topic of the dissertation has to be related to the scope of the research carried out at the Faculty.

The doctoral degree (the dissertation and the postgraduate studies) can be completed in three to four years of full-time work.

Postgraduate studies

In addition to the doctoral dissertation, the doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme in Information Technology includes 30 ECTS of postgraduate studies (doctoral studies). The curriculum of the Doctoral Programme describes the more detailed content, completion methods and learning outcomes of these studies.

Each doctoral student makes a personal doctoral study plan based on the curriculum of the Doctoral Programme, and their personal career goals.

Funding

Preparing a funding planis an essential part of planning doctoral studies. You should note that admission to doctoral studies does not include funding but funding must be applied separately.

A full-time doctoral student needs funding for their own living expenses (salary or working grant) and to cover the costs of doing research (research materials, equipment, travel expenses, etc.).

It is also possible to do doctoral studies part-time while working outside University.

Applying for doctoral studies

If you want to complete a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Information Technology, you must apply for a doctoral study right. There are two application periods per year.

You can also apply for open vacancies for doctoral researchers. These are announced at the JYU web pages (see the link below)
