Doctoral School of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science

The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science provides high-quality post-graduate education based on research carried out in numerous valued international research groups led by top researchers. Each doctoral student works as part of a research group.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy gives graduates the competence for an international research career and challenging specialist assignments in society, including diverse jobs in industry and education. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will cultivate your critical and analytical thinking.

Doctoral degree consists of postgraduate studies and a doctoral dissertation

Postgraduate studies

The doctoral degree includes 30-60 ECTS credits of doctoral studies. The curriculum of each doctoral programme describes the more detailed content, completion methods and learning outcomes of these studies.

Each doctoral student makes a personal doctoral study plan based on the curriculum and their own career goals. The doctoral degree (the doctoral studies and the dissertation) can be completed in three to four years of full-time work.

Doctoral dissertation

The doctoral dissertation is prepared based on the student's research work and the results obtained. The research is carried out in one of the Faculty's research groups, on a topic related to the scope of the research carried out in the group.

Start planning the topic of the research by getting to know the research carried out in the Faculty. Contact the leader of the research group you are interested in to ask about the possibility of getting supervision for your dissertation research.

Funding

Preparing a funding plan is an essential part of planning doctoral studies. You should note that admission to doctoral studies does not include funding but funding must be applied separately.

A full-time doctoral student needs funding for their own living expenses (salary or working grant) and to cover the costs of doing research (research materials, equipment, travel expenses, etc.).

Applying for doctoral studies

If you want to complete a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, you must apply for a doctoral study right. There are two application periods per year.

You can also apply for open vacancies for doctoral researchers. These are announced at the JYU web pages (see the link below)
