Greetings from JYU.Well post doc peer-mentoring program

JYU.Well has launched a peer mentoring program for post-doctoral researchers to provide additional support for their academic careers and interdisciplinary research. The duration of the program is the academic year 2023-24. A similar program has been piloted at JYU earlier. Peer mentoring program refers to a set of guided activities conducted in small multidisciplinary groups continuing throughout one academic year. The multidisciplinary orientation of these groups strengthens interdisciplinarity and supports the development of researcher identity.

JYU.Well peer mentoring programme has proceeded to it's med-term. Alltogether seven peer mentoring groups were formed in August, consisting of two more experienced academic staff members as mentors and 3-5 peers as mentees, who are in the beginning of their academic researcers career. Small groups were formed in accordance with the theme expectations of participants as well as supporting multidisciplinarity

One of the groups met during the week 49 at Ruusupuisto. They had agreed that the theme for this meeting would be the usage of AI in the research. This time present were mentor Tatiana Ryba (Psychology, KPTK) and mentees Evgenia Amey (Cultural studies, HYTK), Atif Ghafoor (Physics/Nanoscience; MLTK) and Laura Joensuu (Sports and health studies, LTK). The other mentor of this group is Milla Saajanaho (Educational studies/KPTK)

The members of the group suggested to the coordinator that visited the group shortly, to take a picture and include it to the JYU.Well newsletter - so this is the result. The group members summed that mentoring had been very useful and pleasant and that the theme for the next meeting would be to explore career paths.

Five of the seven peer mentoring groups function with English language and combine native finnish and international researchers of our university thus forming new tied and bonds for the integration the the international researchers into the community of JYU.

JYU.Well peer mentoring program

  • The guiding principles of peer mentoring are multidisciplinarity, the voluntary nature, and the self-directiveness

  • The activities and discussions in the groups must be based on confidentiality, reciprocity and dialogue.

  • The groups decide on their topics of discussion independently within the groups and by listening every participant.

  • Coordinators of the JYU.Well peer mentoring are Eeva Harjula and Kaisa Koivunen
