Multidisciplinary nanoscience

Nanoscience studies phenomena and structures on the nanoscopic scale in an interdisciplinary manner by applying physics, chemistry and biology. The focus can be, for example, on materials and molecules, where the small size of the system reveals new phenomena. The Nanoscience Center (NSC) of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is Finland’s first multidisciplinary research unit focusing on nanoscience. Globally, there are only a few similar units.

Natural phenomena at the nanoscale

Nanoscience is the study, both theoretically and experimentally, of molecules, materials and structures on the nanometre scale.

Nanoscience is a rapidly developing field that influences innovation in electronics and many other everyday technologies. The Nanoscience Center conducts research that aims to respond to society’s major challenges by combining expertise and methods from a range of disciplines that complement each other. For example, research related to health and wellbeing, sustainable development, and the second quantum revolution is carried out at the NSC in collaboration with different fields within the university, as well as with other domestic and foreign universities. NSC is Finland’s only truly interdisciplinary research unit focusing on nanoscience, and there are only a few similar ones worldwide.

NSC produces high-quality multidisciplinary research and actively promotes the appreciation of science in society through education, science communication and industrial cooperation. The unit also carries out development projects with companies and has its own spin-off companies starting from the center. NSC offers a unique opportunity to study nanoscience as a major right from the beginning of university studies to the doctoral degree level.

The core research areas

The Nanoscience Center is Finland’s only truly interdisciplinary research unit focusing on nanoscience, and there are only a few similar ones worldwide. NSC is responsible for one of the core research areas of the faculty – multidisciplinary nanoscience. Nanoscience is also one of the faculty’s profiling areas.

It really gives a wider perspective when we provide chances for young people and influence their lives. Students are full of optimism, which rubs off on me as well.

Multidisciplinary cooperation

The Nanoscience Centre is involved in various international partnerships, networks and alliances.
