Layout of the thesis
- The Department of Chemistry and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics use the University's template, which can be found in the guidelines of the editorial team of the Open Science Centre.
- The Department of Biological and Environmental Science has its (UNO intranet, login required), which should be used for all dissertations at the Department.
- The Department of Physics has its (UNO intranet, login required), which should be used for all dissertations at the Department.
Make sure that your dissertation complies with the university, faculty and departmental dissertation requirements. Please note in particular that the short abstract must be written in both Finnish and English.
You should contact the scientific editor of the Department before submitting your work for pre-exmination, and the JYU publishing services at the latest during the pre-examination. The scientific editors are listed on the website of the editorial team of the Open Science Centre.
Supplementary material
The doctoral candidate must ensure that any attached files are easily available to the preliminary examiners and the opponent, either as an attached part of the dissertation (pdf), as a separate attached file (pdf, excel), or as a web link that takes you directly to the material. The web link should be clearly visible, e.g. on the cover page of the article. The doctoral candidate delivers the material (dissertation manuscript and possible separate files) to the Faculty Doctoral School, which forwards the material to the preliminary examiners as an attachment to the official invitation. Custos delivers the dissertation to the opponent. Custos must ensure that the opponent also receives possible supplementary files in one of the above-mentioned forms.
Publishing and printing of the thesis
The doctoral student takes care of publishing the thesis. Publication is possible only after the permission for public examination has been received. However, be sure to agree on the schedule and other issues related to publication with the scientific editor of the Department (see the departmental guidelines below) and with the JYU publishing services as early as possible.
Please note that the JYU publishing services should receive the material ready for publication at least 1 month before the public examination. The exact schedule should always be agreed directly with the publishing services! Contact details can be found on the guidelines of the editorial team of the Open Science Centre. The publishing services can help you e.g. with technical matters and the publication permissions for your articles. The doctoral candidate submits the material to be published directly to publishing services, after receiving the permission from the scientific editor (see the departmental guidelines below).
Department of Chemistry
- At the Department of Chemistry, the main supervisor of the doctoral thesis acts as the scientific editor of the thesis. He or she will help you with the formatting of your dissertation and will submit the publication permit to the publishing services once you have received your permission for public examination.
- Dissertations published at the Department of Chemistry must be accompanied by a list of previous dissertations in the department. The faculty doctoral school will send this list to you, at the latest when the decision on the permission for public examination is made. Remember to submit the list to the JYU publishing services together with your dissertation.
- Please discuss the number of printed copies with your supervisor and inform the publishing services of the desired number. The Department of Chemistry will pay for a total of 40 printed books (A5, binded; 27 for the doctoral candidate, 10 for the janitors to be delivered to the defence, 1 for the education coordinator of the department, 2 obligatory copies for the library). The University will pay for 3 handouts (A4, spiral) for the public examination (one for opponent, one for custos, one for doctoral candidate).
Department of Physics
- At the Department of Physics, the Head of the Doctoral Programme acts as the scientific editor of the thesis. He or she will help you with the formatting of your dissertation and will submit the publication permit to the publishing services once you have received your permission for public examination.
- Please discuss the number of printed copies with your supervisor and inform the publishing services of the desired number. The Department of Physics will pay for 20 printed books (A5, binded), plus the 2 obligatory copies for the library.
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
- At the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the main supervisor of the doctoral thesis acts as the scientific editor of the thesis. He or she will help you with the formatting of your dissertation and will submit the publication permit to the publishing services once you have received your permission for public examination.
- Please discuss the number of printed copies with your supervisor and inform the publishing services of the desired number. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will pay for 30 printed books (A5, binded), plus the 2 obligatory copies for the library.
Department of Biological and Environmental Science
- At the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, there are many scientific editors of doctoral theses. The scientific editors are listed in the guidelines of the editorial team of the Open Science Centre, and on the (login required). The scientific editor will help you with the formatting of your dissertation and will submit the publication permit to the publishing services once you have received your permission for public examination.
- Please discuss the number of printed copies with your supervisor and inform the publishing services of the desired number. The University will pay for 3 handouts (A4, spiral) for the public examination (one for opponent, one for custos, one for doctoral candidate). In addition, you should print at least the following binded A5 size books: 2 obligatory copies for the library (delivered to the library by the publishing services), 1 copy for the department (delivered to the education coordinator of the department by the publishing services), 1 copy for each preliminary examiner, 1 copy for each supervisor. Discuss with your supervisor whether you should also print a B5-sized book for the opponent in addition to the spiral-bound A4 book. The Department of Biological and Environmental Science will pay the costs of printing up to 200 euros. Any excess must be paid by the doctoral candidate.
