The stages of the publication process

Dissertation template

The doctoral candidate must use the dissertation template for Word, which includes the required formatting and ensures compliance with legal document accessibility requirements.

It is recommended to start using the Word template at the beginning of the writing process. However, at the latest, the manuscript must be transferred to the template before the dissertation is published.

The editorial team assists doctoral candidates with the use of the template.

Finalizing and submitting the manuscript

  • The doctoral candidate must submit the material to the editorial team in the template format (as a doc/docx file) no later than one month before the defense date, unless agreed otherwise. Materials prepared in LaTeX should be submitted as a pdf file.
  • Articles and/or manuscripts included in the dissertation should be sent as separate attachments (docx, pdf).
  • The doctoral candidate is responsible for finalizing the language, proofreading, and correctly formatting citations in their work. The candidates may use any preferred or established citation style in their dissertation.
  • If available, the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) of each source should be included in the bibliography.

The public availability and copyrights of dissertations

In a public educational institution, a thesis is considered a public document. According to the publication principles of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, theses are published openly. Therefore, also dissertations published outside the JYU Dissertion series are published openly, including those published by commercial publishers.

Only in exceptional cases, the authors may choose limited openness for their dissertation. Also in these cases, according to the Act on the Openness of Government Activities, e.g. the name of the author and the title of dissertation remains public, and the entire thesis must be provided to those requesting it.

For dissertations published in the JYU Dissertations series, the copyright of the content remains with the author. Thus, the author can freely use their dissertation or parts thereof, for instance, in teaching. An appropriate reference to the original source should always be made.
