Credit transfer

Planning your studies before the start of the exchange
During the first application phase within JYU, you should consider your credit transfer plan: how your studies will contribute to your degree. At this stage, you may need to plan your courses based on the offerings of the current academic year of your host university.
Once you have been accepted and in the later stages of the exchange process when you create your course plan or Learning Agreement, you will have a better understanding of the course offerings during your exchange period. However, for the credit transfer plan, it is usually sufficient to note 'Elective/Optional studies' or 'All credits will be transferred; course specific recognition will be decided upon return,' along with the number of credits you intend to complete during the exchange.
Be prepared for the possibility that your course choices may need to be adjusted once you arrive at your exchange destination. Your initial study plan is only preliminary.
Principles of credit transfer - substitution and inclusion
Transferring the credits into your degree at your home university is one of the basic principles of student exchange. Studies completed at foreign universities are fully transferred to your degree. An exception is if you take a course on an exchange that is completely identical in content to a course you have already completed at JYU because you cannot take the same course twice.
Exchange studies are credited either by substitution or inclusion.
Substitution means that a JYU course is directly replaced by a course taken abroad. The condition is that the courses correspond to each other sufficiently in terms of content, level, and scope (mini. credits). Substitutions are granted at the study course level for individual courses.
With inclusion, it is possible to include in the degree courses completed in an exchange, for which there is no direct equivalent in JYU's curricula. Most of the studies completed abroad are transferred by inclusion.
The acceptance of exchange studies, i.e. whether the courses can replace JYU courses or how they are included in your degree, can only be confirmed after you return from the exchange.
How to transfer credits after exchange
The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ requires that you transfer the studies you completed during the exchange to the JYU study register.
Studies completed abroad are not transferred automatically to your JYU degree.
For the credit transfer, you need an official transcript of records from your exchange university or an equivalent certificate of the studies you have completed. Once you have received it, contact your educational planner or international coordinator according to the additional instructions below in order to discuss the credit transfer.
Even if you already have an idea of how you would like your studies to be transferred, discuss your options and how best to place your studies in your degree with your education planner or international coordinator. Only then apply for credit transfers as agreed in Sisu. This will also prevent your application from being rejected and you having to do it again.
The instructions below will get you started; the University's instructions for Recognition of Prior Learning will provide you with more detailed guidance .

Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences
Exchange studies rarely substitute a JYU course, meaning that these courses are usually included in your elective studies. You may form a KAVKOK Study Module in International Studies of the exchange studies.
Faculty of Mathematics and Science
After returning from exchange, contact the Education Coordinator(s) of the department(s) whose field is closest to the courses you took during the exchange. Please use the HelpJYU form.
Faculty of Information Technology
After you have received your Transcript of Records or attendance certificate (e.g. for FORTHEM Short Term Mobility) from the foreign higher education institution, please contact the International Coordinator of the Faculty.
Please have at hand the course description(s) which indicate the level of studies and the credits awarded. For FORTHEM Short Term Mobility where the credits are not stated, please have at hand the programme schedule and an estimation of the overall hours of learning. Please note that 1 ECTS = 27 hrs of learning, including all learning, e.g. taught lectures, seminars, exams, independent assignments.
