Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

• A publication can be included in the series of FIER if it supports the Institute's national mission of high-quality educational research or related societal impact.
• The publication must be immediately available as open access. Any possible embargo periods will be agreed upon separately.
• The authors are responsible for finalizing the language, proofreading, and ensuring the correct citation of sources, as well as producing alternative texts to meet accessibility requirements.
• The authors must ensure that they have adhered to good scientific practice at all stages of the research process.
• Authorship must be agreed upon among the authors before the publication process. The determination of authorship is based on Ethical principles of publishing at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥
• Authors must follow good data management practices. At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, the research data management policy outlines the related principles, responsibilities, and tasks.

A free-form publication proposal and a possible manuscript can be sent to publishing coordinator Sini Tuikka. The publication proposal should include:

• the (working) title of the work and the author(s),
• an estimate of the publication’s length (number of pages),
• an estimate of the number of images, tables, and figures, and
• an estimated date by which the final version of the manuscript can be submitted for the publication process.

The final decisions on accepting manuscripts for the series are made by the editorial board of the publication series, based on the manuscript.

The editorial board members are Maarit Arvaja, Maarit Ansela, Hannu Heikkinen, Taina Saarinen (chair), and Jonna Pulkkinen.

The editorial board will make a decision within one month of receiving the manuscript. If needed, the board may request additional information from the authors before making a final decision on publication.

The editorial board selects two responsible members to present a proposal to the board regarding the publication of the report. The proposal will evaluate whether:

• the publication fits within the national mission of the Finnish Institute for Educational Research,
• the publication meets the requirements of a scientific working paper or report,
• the sources are properly cited, and
• there is a need for language editing.

If it is immediately clear that the content does not fit the profile of the publication series, the manuscript will not be reviewed further. Based on the proposal, the editorial board may accept, reject, or request revisions such as language editing or a review of sources.

An exception is made for dissertations published in series Studies since they are reviewed within the preliminary examination process.

• A template with predefined document styles is available for writers.
• The primary format for publications is online, but printed copies can be produced if necessary (e.g., for authors' and audience copies of dissertations). The final print run will include the legally required deposit copies, the number of which (2–6 copies) depends on the size of the print run.
• For studies published in Studies, a unique cover design will be created, and standardized colors used in international assessment studies may also be considered for the internal pages. Consistency across the series’ publications is ensured through permanent elements such as the series title on the cover, recurring recognizable elements, the publication’s serial number, and the logo of the Finnish Institute for Educational Research (FIER). Partner logos may also be added to the cover.
• The Reports and Working Papers series has a standardized cover design featuring permanent recognizable elements, the series title, and the FIER logo. Partner and funder logos may also be added to the cover.

Images, Figures, and Tables

• The recommended resolution for images included in the publications is 300 dpi. Images should be submitted separately in their original file format (jpg, tiff, eps, png) in addition to the manuscript. Authors are responsible for ensuring they have permission to use the images in an open-access online publication if the images are not their own original creations for the specific publication.

Accessibility

• Publications are created in compliance with the European Accessibility Act. Accessibility is ensured during the layout and publishing process (e.g., appropriate color usage). Web content accessibility also requires that all non-text content has textual equivalents (alt-text). Authors must produce alternative texts for images, figures, and tables. The editorial team will guide the authors.

• Both FIER series have official ISSN identifiers, and each publication in the series, along with its various formats, receives a unique ISBN identifier.
• Publications in the series are stored in a collection named after the series in the JYX repository of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and receive permanent unique online identifiers (URN, DOI).
• Researchers are encouraged to create an ORCID identifier, include it in their publications, and add it to their profile in Converis. It is also recommended to grant Converis permission for the automatic transfer of publications to ORCID.
• The Open Science Centre at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ stores the publications in the Converis research information system, from which they will automatically update to ORCID's publication list once the researcher has granted permission for the transfer.
• We encourage authors to actively promote their publication. You can plan the communication strategy together with the communications secretary of FIER. The permanent web address of the publication (URN, DOI) is easy to share within your networks and on social media. It can also be linked to researchers' community services (e.g., ResearchGate).

Publications are licensed under Creative Commons licenses, which specify the possibilities and restrictions for the further use of the publication. Any specific details regarding the license can be agreed upon as needed during the publication process.

The copyright of the content of the publication always remains with the authors.

The editorial team

• instructs the authors and agrees on the publication schedule,
• requests (if necessary) quotations for layout and printing,
• oversees the layout of the publication and cover design,
• acquires an ISBN and permanent online identifiers for the publication,
• assists the author with the creation of tables, figures, and images, if needed,
• monitors the printing process, if necessary,
• manages online publishing, and
• prepares a communication plan and press release with the authors, if necessary.

The authors

• are responsible for the content of the publication, finalizing the language, proofreading, and ensuring proper citation of sources. The publication may use a citation style established for its field, but its use must be consistent.
• ensure that they have the rights to use images and the necessary permissions for third-party materials.
