JYU.Wisdom Neuloosi goes Xmas peer support (food+crafts edition)

The JYU.Wisdom Neuloosi gathers once a month for a relaxed handicraft hour. This time the theme is Xmas peer support! Join us as we come together to ease the anxieties related to the meat- and consumer-centrism of Christmas. Welcome to get to know the Wisdom community, relax after work/studies, perhaps do some crafts and share Christmas recipes that better support planetary well-being.

Dietary changes are the most impactful and one of the "easiest" sustainability choices a consumer can make. But why is a ham still the centre piece of many Christmas tables? Why is it so hard to find vegan ginger bread cookies in the grocery store? Why does one also have to smear dairy into "rosolli" (a cold dish traditionally served as part of the Finnish Christmas meal)?

Furthermore - many struggle with how consumerist Christmas has become. How do you tell your aunt not to buy yet another mug that you don't need? Sound familiar? Does the meat- and consumer-centrist nature of Christmas bother you too? Could we cherish and celebrate other, "softer" values during the heart of winter?

The JYU.Wisdom Neuloosi knitting club has traditionally focused on knitting, crocheting, mending, spinning yarn, or designing new knitting projects, but this time the event includes other features too. Join us to discuss the best alternative recipes for a Christmas meal that better support planetary well-being, participate in a Christmas decoration crafts workshop hosted by lovely Beda from Neon Studio, or simply step in to the House of Wisdom (officially the Gardener's House), have a breather with the Wisdom community and enjoy a hot cuppa. You can be at any stage of your resource-wiser-Xmas-transition, whether you're excited about trying your first seitan recipe or perhaps you're already a pro and could share your wisdom with others.

Crafts workshop - additional information

During the event you'll have the possibility to learn from Beda Räsänen of Neon studio. She will guide us through crafting Christmas decorations from recycled materials. We will have extra supplies available so you just need to bring yourself. You're also very welcome to bring some of your own materials for your own use or to share with others. For example toilet paper cardboard rolls / other cardboard, aluminium foil wrappers / lids (from e.g. yoghurt cups), discardable old books, spare thread or other craftsy items.

As usual, this JYU.Wisdom event is open for all and there will be coffee, tea, (non-alcoholic) mulled wine and cookies (vegan ofc) served! <3 We start at 4pm, but you can also join later. We will be around until 6pm. Let's make Christmas more resource-wise together, step-by-step!

ps. There are rumours going around that the best vegan Christmas "ham" recipe will be revealed during the event. Believe it or not or better yet - dare to challenge it but don't miss out!

JYU.Wisdom brings together researchers, students and other people interested in and different sustainability themes, and enables cross-disciplinary networking and collaboration. We promote planetary well-being through research, educational development and social interaction, and support the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥'s sustainability work.
