Application process

Where can I find the application form?

The online application form will be available in the during the application period.

Is there an application fee?

No, there is not. Applying is free of charge.

How can I find a supervisor?

You must contact the representative of the subject in the unit providing doctoral training in your field of science to arrange supervision for your doctoral studies. The arrangements for supervision must be made before you submit your application. You should contact either the main representative of the subject or the potential supervisor, depending on the doctoral programme. Please see the main stages in applying for doctoral training for more information.

I have not yet completed my master’s degree. Can I still apply for a doctoral programme?

You can apply even if the degree that provides your eligibility to apply for doctoral studies has not yet been awarded. The faculty may make a conditional admission decision. This means that you will be admitted to the doctoral program if you complete your qualifying degree and submit the relevant educational documents by the deadline specified in the application guidelines.

How do I fill in the application form if my qualifying degree is incomplete?

If the qualification that gives you the eligibility to apply is not yet complete, you can mark it "incomplete" in the qualification fields of the application form, if necessary.

How do I fill in the application form if my qualifying degree does not include a thesis?

If your qualifying degree does not include a thesis, you can mark "no thesis" in the thesis fields of the application form, if necessary.

Attachements of the application

I have a master's degree from the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥. What educational documents should I attach to my application?

Attach a research plan and doctoral study plan to your application. If there are faculty-specific documents such as a CV or motivation letter, attach them as well.

If you have completed your degree at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, you do not need to send officially certified copies of your degree certificate and transcript of records. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ verifies your degree from the university's database.

I have completed my master's degree from another Finnish university. What educational documents should I attach to my application?

Attach your research plan and doctoral study plan as well as your master's degree certificate and transcript of records to your application. If there are faculty-specific documents such as a CV or motivation letter, attach them as well.

If you have completed your degree in one of the other universities or universities of applied sciences in Finland, you do not need to submit paper copies of your educational documents by post. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ will verify your degree electronically using a national database. However, you must upload pdf-copies of your degree certificate and transcript of records (the original official documents or officially certified copies) to your application form at Studyinfo.fi.

What happens if one of the required attachments is missing from my application?

If you have submitted your application before the deadline, we will ask you to complete your application with the missing attachment, if necessary.

Language proficiency

If I completed my previous studies in English, do I still need to take a language test?

Whether you are required to take a language test depends on the country in which you completed your master’s degree and its language of tuition. Each applicant, even native speakers of English, must prove their language proficiency in one of the ways described in the application guidelines. Please see Demonstrating language skills for more information.

Is it possible to send my language proficiency test result after the application deadline?

Applicants who have submitted their application before the application deadline will be requested, when necessary, to supplement their application. However, if you are required to take a language test, we strongly recommend that you schedule one at your earliest convenience. The number of test dates and seats is usually quite limited. Please check the test dates and locations near you by visiting the webpage of the test organiser.

Scholarships

How much is the tuition fee?

In Finland, there are no tuition fees for the doctoral programmes. However, please note that unless you are a Nordic or EU citizen, you should have a secure means of support to get a residence permit in Finland. Please visit the website of the for information about residence permits and related requirements.

What steps do I need to take to apply for a full scholarship for doctoral studies at JYU?

When you apply for admission to a doctoral programme, you apply for a doctoral study right. As a rule, the doctoral study right does not include funding. Funding must be applied separately. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ does not offer full scholarships for doctoral students. However, there are different funding options. You can discuss your funding options with the representative of the subject or your potential supervisor at JYU.

Studying in a doctoral programme

Can I study part-time?

At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, it is possible to carry out doctoral studies in an employment relationship with the University, as a grant researcher or part-time. Please discuss your study plan with the representative of the subject or the potential supervisor at JYU.

Do you offer programmes as distance learning?

The doctoral programmes of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ are not designed to be completed as distance or online learning. All doctoral students are expected to be able to be present on the campus at Jyväskylä at least occasionally. The required presence on campus depends on the student’s research plan and doctoral study plan and the arrangements of supervision.
