Doctoral studies: Demonstrating language skills

Table of contents

The instructions are valid during the 2025 admission rounds to doctoral programmes at JYU.

Language skills in doctoral training

Doctoral students need language skills to gain knowledge of their field of research for example by reading international scientific publications. They must be able to produce academic text that meets the requirements for scientific writing in the language of their dissertation and to communicate their research on various occasions such as national and international scientific conferences. Acting and networking in an international scientific community demand language skills. In addition, doctoral students are members of the multicultural and international university community. Therefore, language skills are included in the admission criteria for doctoral training at the Ģֱ.

Language skills develop further during doctoral training, and it is possible to strengthen those skills by attending language and communication skills courses offered to doctoral students by the University. For doctoral graduates, good language skills bring benefits in the demanding expert and development roles and international collaboration.

Demonstrating your language skills with a degree

Country in which the degree is completed

The language skills required of the applicant can be demonstrated by a higher education degree completed in Finland that provides eligibility to apply for doctoral studies, or another higher education degree of the same or higher level.

Proficiency in English can be demonstrated with a higher education degree that provides eligibility to apply for doctoral studies (or a degree of the same or a higher level) when completed in English in an EU/EEA country or in one of the following countries: Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada, Dominica, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

If you have completed a degree in English in a country that is not mentioned above, the degree unfortunately will not be accepted for proving language proficiency, even if English is a commonly used language in the country in question.

Studies completed on offshore campuses outside the accepted countries cannot be used to indicate language skills, even if the degree-awarding institution is located in one of the accepted countries.

A degree is considered to have been completed in one of the countries listed above if at least 50% of the study units of the completed degree have been completed in the country.

For fully online degrees, the country in which the degree is completed is the country in which the awarding institution is located.

Language of instruction

The teaching language of the degree must have been English, and the thesis must have been written in English. The teaching language must be specified in the educational documents submitted in connection with the application. If the teaching language of the degree is not specified, at least 50% of the study units of the completed degree must have been completed in English.

Demonstrating language skills with an uncompleted degree

If you are demonstrating your language skills with the same degree that verifies your eligibility and the degree is uncompleted at the end time of the application period, your language skills will be verified before admission.

Demonstrating language skills with another higher education degree

You can verify your eligibility with one degree and demonstrate your language skills with another higher education degree of the same or higher level completed in the above-mentioned countries. In that case, you are required to submit educational documents regarding both degrees. The degree that demonstrates language skills is indicated in the Other eligibility for doctoral training field of the application form. In this case, you cannot demonstrate your language skills with an incomplete degree, i.e., you must have graduated with the degree used as proof of your language skills.

Demonstrating language proficiency with a language test or language proficiency certificate

If you are going to verify your language skills with a language test, book a time for it well in advance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make the language test arrangements.

Demonstrating Finnish language skills

Accepted tests and minimum required scores are as follows:

  • National Certificate of Language Proficiency, which must be passed with proficiency level 4 in all skill components (speaking, writing, listening, and reading comprehension). It is possible to combine performances from different attempts of the test, or
  • Civil service language proficiency certificate, which must be passed with good speaking and writing skills.

The instructions below tell you how to submit proof of your language skills with your application.

Demonstrating your language skills during the application process

Please note that  the primary means of demonstrating language skills is a degree and a language test or certificate. As we cannot guarantee an applicant's access to the ACRES assessment, we recommend that you take a language test or examination if you cannot demonstrate your language skills with your degree.

For the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, other demonstrations of English language proficiency may be replaced by an Academic readiness screening (ACRES) during the application process. In this case, language skills are not demonstrated by the documents attached to the application. The ACRES assessment is used in the following doctoral programmes:

  • Doctoral Programme in Biological and Environmental Science
  • Doctoral Programme in Chemistry
  • Doctoral Programme in Information Technology
  • Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Statistics
  • Doctoral Programme in Physics

This option is available to a limited number of applicants, who are selected on the basis of their eligibility and the selection criteria. The Ģֱ will contact the applicant to conduct the evaluation.

After the language skills of the applicant have been evaluated, the same applicant can only be re-evaluated after one year after the first evaluation at the earliest.
