At JYU, you can work, for example, as a Professor, Research Professor, Research Director, Researcher, Senior Lecturer, or University Teacher. The eligibility criteria for a professorship include a doctoral degree, high-level scientific qualification and when it is important for the duties involved, practical knowledge of the task area.

Professor

When considering the merits, the list of review targets include the applicant’s scientific publications, other academic merits, experience of scientific research management, capability to give high-standard research-based teaching and guidance, evidence of national and international cooperation in the research field represented, teaching and guidance experience and pedagogical education, produced study materials, other merits achieved in teaching posts, and when necessary, teaching skill proven by a teaching demonstration.

In addition, the list continues with the applicant’s success in obtaining supplementary research funding, international scientific working, academic positions of trust and other active participation in the academic community as well as experience of societal interaction. 

In principle, permanent professorships at JYU are reached through the Tenure Track system.

Research Professor / Research Director

The eligibility criteria for these posts are job-specific, though defined basically so that they correspond to the qualification criteria for a Professor. In filling these vacancies, the candidate’s merits must always be evaluated, and the selection procedure is equivalent to what is used with Professors.

Professor of practice

At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, a person eligible to the post of Professor of Practice can be an expert or professional working or having worked in a social position, in the academic world, economic life or in the public sector. A Professor of Practice is expected to strengthen the University’s social relations as well as to review and develop the field concerned. In addition, a Professor of Practice builds networks between the University and the world of work and brings to the university community topical information about working life practices, which can be used in teaching and research activities. A Professor of Practice can also teach at the University regarding his/her specific field of expertise.

As a rule, the post requires an applicable doctoral degree. Exceptionally, for particular justified reasons, also a person without a doctoral degree can be appointed as Professor of Practice. In such a case, the person must be otherwise especially merited in terms of both science and working life practice of his/her field.

The post is a fixed-term one. The merit assessment procedure involves external expert reviews. Funding is determined specifically for each post.
 

Visiting Professor / Junior Visiting Professor

In order to increase and support international activities and internationalisation, JYU recruits persons to the respective posts of Visiting Professors and Junior Visiting Professors. In this way, we are actively seeking collaboration with merited and adept international researchers interested in research cooperation. The purpose is also to deepen the University’s international research activities and cooperation.

Senior university lecturer

A Senior university lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree as well as provide proof of autonomous scientific research work, capability for high-quality, research-based teaching and for the supervision of theses, and where important in view of the duties, practical knowledge of the task area. In merit evaluation, the list of items includes scientific work, teaching experience and pedagogical education, produced study materials, other merits in teaching work and, where necessary, teaching skill proven by a teaching demonstration, as well as other applicable merits.

Senior lecturer / Senior researcher

The eligibility criteria for these posts include an applicable doctoral degree, proof of autonomous scientific research work, capability for high-quality, research-based teaching and for the supervision of theses, and where important in view of the duties, practical knowledge of the task area. For Senior Lecturer posts, the emphasis can be placed either on research or teaching merits.  
 

University teacher

The eligibility criteria for this post include an applicable master’s degree and teaching skill needed in the job. In teaching-related evaluation, the list of items includes teaching and guidance experience, pedagogical education, produced study materials, other merits in teaching work, and where necessary, teaching ability proven by a teaching demonstration.

Postdoctoral  researcher

This is a post doc job, lasting typically from four to six years. The eligibility criteria include an applicable doctoral degree and capability for autonomous scientific work as well as teaching skill needed in the post. Where needed, further job-specific requirements can be set with regard to the content and field of the degree, as well as other relevant qualifications, taking into account that the post is essentially about an autonomous research and teaching job where the person acts as a responsible designer and implementer.

Doctoral researcher

JYU has a Graduate School operating at the university level and steering the doctoral studies of different faculties. Faculties also have their own Graduate Schools. The faculties admit the students, provide education and award the degrees. Practical doctoral education takes place in various doctoral programmes.

The eligibility criteria for Doctoral Researcher posts include a master’s degree and postgraduate study rights at JYU. Where needed, further job-specific requirements can be set with regard to the content or field of the degree.
