Wireless network
Wireless network connections are available on the university campus, depending on the location. The wireless network offers connection speeds of 11-54 Mbps (802.11b/g)
The wireless networks used are:
- jyu-student - for students
- jyu-staff - for staff
- eduroam - for portable use
- jyu-guest - visitor network for visitors
Students and staff always need a valid Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ user account to use the wireless network. Agora exceptionally offers an open wireless network called agora-open, but it is not recommended to use this if it is possible to use the student or staff network.
The username and password of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ may not work directly with the jyu-student, jyu-staff or eduroam network, but require configuration.
Visitors' network
For visitors from outside the University, access to public internet services via a wireless network is provided for University activities. Access to the visitor network is granted to identified users or by other access methods agreed upon. Exceptional or special arrangements and associated costs will always be agreed separately with Digital Services.
Target group and purpose of the service
The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ Visitors' Network (the Service) is intended for use by visitors to the University as a temporary tool to provide them with limited Internet access on their own terminal for the duration of their short visit.
Please note that people from can use the with their own account and do not need a Visitor Network account.
The service is referred to as guestnet. On the wireless network, the guest network is visible on the base stations managed by IT services under the name jyu-guest. The service requires the user to log in.
The guest network service is not intended to be used to access the University's own online services, but only as a means of connecting to services located elsewhere.
The Visitor Network is not a substitute for University network services and is not suitable for all internal and external University services. Anyone with a legitimate need must apply for access to the University's information systems in accordance with normal practice.
Who can grant access to the visitor network and a user account?
Temporary access to the service may be granted to a person visiting the University as a guest invited by a member of the University staff, a University unit, a University association or a registered subject association.
The staff member inviting the guest can grant the guest a short period of access (max. 2 days) or apply for a longer period of access at the Digital Services Service Desk.
Non-staff members can apply for an account at the Digital Services Service Desk.
Getting user accounts
As a member of staff, you can also create your own short term accounts on guestnet.jyu.fi, five at a time, for your guest's needs.
For longer-term or multiple-guest needs, user accounts will be issued on request at the Digital Services Service Desk (3rd floor, Seminaarimäki Lähde building (B 314) : weekdays 10.00 - 14.00) during opening hours. The request can be made by visiting the service desk or by using the .
Non-staff members can request the creation of an account by visiting the service desk or using the .
To avoid delays and errors, the request must contain the following information:
- Name of the invited
- Number and duration of access codes required
- Names of guests. Tags will always be assigned to the name of the guest.
The Service Desk will only email user accounts to University email addresses and where a subject organisation or equivalent requests accounts, the organisation must have a functioning website where up-to-date contact details for representatives of the organisation can be found.
Period of validity and restrictions
Only accounts with a time limit can be created for the visitor network. They are only valid for the required predefined period of time. The access codes issued are personal and may not be transferred to third parties. Use of the visitor network is subject to compliance with the conditions of use of the University's information systems. However, a single account may be used to log on to more than one device at the same time.
For security reasons, data traffic on the service is restricted and the protocols allowed on the Internet are:
- Browser use: http and https
- End-to-end connection: ssh
- Email: imaps and submission (smtp over ssl, tcp/587)
- VPN: IPSec over NAT, OpenVPN, PPTP and also SSL-VPN with https
- Connection testing: ping
The use of the guest network, except for the creation of credentials, is not intended for members of the University community themselves, except for a short period of access to the service, who have access to or are entitled to access the network connections provided by the University. They must use the services intended for members of the university community.
