Software Distribution - Digital Services

Where can I get the licence or right to use the software I want? How much would the software cost?

Digital services software licence management and terms of use

Digital Services enters into various agreements with software and licence resellers or manufacturers. In the main, these agreements concern software for use by the whole university community or, to a lesser extent, by its staff. A good example is the software contracts for the M365 environment.

Most university-level licences/licences are academically priced. If your use includes commercial elements or use outside the University then please contact Digital Services to check the licence terms. It is the responsibility of the institutions and users to ensure that they use the licences in accordance with their terms and conditions.

It is also possible to purchase individual licences through Digital Services from a contracted licence wholesaler. At the same time, you can find out whether there is an existing agreement for the software you want to use.

Software for which there is no licence or right of use will not be installed on University workstations.

Software installation for staff

Staff can request software or software installation from the using two different forms:

Before submitting the request, please check if the required application is available in the Software Center (the icon can be found in the desktop view of your workstation).

Software provided by the university

In a multidisciplinary university, the software library is considerable. Below are some examples of software for which licences are available or a channel to obtain them. Licence purchases have also been made directly from institutions, so information on the various licences is also available from colleagues.

  • Word processing, spreadsheet and presentation graphics: M365 (campus licence)
  • Remote lectures and meetings: zoom (campus license, educational use), Teams (campus license, other use), multimedia and on-premises recording (JYU proprietary)
  • Statistical analysis: SPSS and SAS (campus licence)
  • Qualitative analysis: ATLAS.ti (campus license)
  • Image processing: Adobe products (monthly rental in the cloud)
  • Symbolic Mathematics: Mathematica and Matlab (shared cost for faculty).
  • Research data collection (including sensitive): RedCap (campus license)
  • Storage and sharing of research data: NextCloud (research groups)

SPSS and Atlas.ti software is available for students' home use for a small fee.

M365 services can be activated by degree students .

Use of the software is only allowed for academic purposes!
