Research and corporate cooperation in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science

Companies and organizations can take advantage of the latest research knowledge as well as the experts and extensive research infrastructure of the faculty. The possibilities for cooperation include corporate-funded research cooperation, jointly funded research and development projects, and cooperation related to theses and dissertations.

Corporate-funded research cooperation

In corporate-funded research cooperation, we can flexibly take into account a company’s needs and wishes. Corporate-funded research requires timely planning, so that the schedules of researchers and the company can be coordinated. Corporate-funded research in cooperation with JYU researchers can provide a company with new innovations, insights and scientifically based findings to advance their product development. For a researcher, corporate-funded research cooperation offers the opportunity to engage in interesting, applied research and the chance to publish those results that do not call for secrecy.

Corporate-funded research projects are conducted both at departments and in research centres together with companies and organizations of different fields and sizes. Corporate-funded research typically seeks a solution to a company’s short-term problem. The length of the cooperation period varies from short-term consultancy up to development projects lasting for several years. The overarching goal of cooperation is to promote the competitiveness and well-being of Finnish society.

If you are interested in corporate-funded research cooperation, please contact our business services managers. We can tailor our services to meet your particular needs.

Jointly funded research cooperation

Jointly funded research cooperation involves research with a long-term perspective, seeking to solve future problems together while also sharing the financial risk. The projects typically involve many different operators, such as research institutes, universities, or stakeholders, which enables networking and sharing of information between the partners. Jointly funded research projects are usually fairly long, lasting for several years.

The projects can be funded partly or entirely by the project partners. Partial or full funding for a project can also be applied for from Business Finland, the Academy of Finland or various EU financing instruments, for example.
Jointly funded research projects aim at providing solutions for companies’ strategic long-term developmental challenges as well as yielding scientific outcomes and publications. The results of jointly funded research projects are mostly public, but publishing takes place in compliance with business secrets and the publishing schedules of possible patented outcomes. The applicable IPR rights depend on the funding used and on the agreements between the project parties.

Companies can also impact the resources for research and teaching by funding research staff or equipment for a specific area.

Cooperation with students on theses and dissertations

Does your company have a suitable job, place for work practice, or a commission? The students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science have a versatile skill set and can make a valuable contribution not only in terms of work but also in the form of new ideas, fresh expertise and the latest knowledge.

Our students can be asked for internships or to carry out various projects or work related to theses and dissertations.

Need an intern?

Employing an intern provides an opportunity to put emerging ideas into practice and try out new endeavours with low risks. At the same time, you help train multiskilled professionals who have internalised the culture of your work community. As an employer offering an internship, you can negotiate about internship support with the department.

Propose a theme for a master’s thesis

Cooperation related to a thesis or dissertation offers the commissioning organization a chance to take advantage of adept and high-quality research in the development of their own activities. University studies guarantee that students have at their disposal the latest research knowledge as well as the skill to apply it precisely in the way needed for the task at hand. For master’s students, the master’s thesis develops students’ skills in independent information search and analysis. Preparing and reporting on a thesis takes from six to twelve months, and it requires the student to produce new knowledge as well as to apply that knowledge in answering their research questions.
