Ageing and care

The Gerontology Research Center (GEREC) is a collaborative effort in ageing research run jointly by the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and Tampere University. The central research themes of the centre include active ageing, life-space mobility, physical activity, health, functioning, longevity and biological ageing, life course, retirement, agency, services, care and politics.

The Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare), funded by the Academy of Finland (2018–2025), is a concerted effort of four different Research Groups coming from the Universities of Jyväskylä, Tampere and Helsinki. CoE AgeCare studies the transformation of ageing and care of older people through a new conceptual and interdisciplinary lens. The three Thematic Units underlining the research conducted by the Centre are care needs and inequalities, agency and self-determination of older people and diversification of care work.

Active Aging and Care (AAC) was an Academy-funded profiling action of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, which was implemented in cooperation between the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences between 2018-2022. Its key research areas were active ageing, person-environment interactions and wellbeing in old age, digitalization of old age, and care and housing policy.

AAC promoted the functional capacity and wellbeing of older people y reducing the need for care and by producing scientific knowledge that aided in the development of care policies. Many of the innovations in active ageing and care are related to digital technologies
