Managing Social Sustainability of Sport

In this research project, we will explore the institutional logics that guide the management of social sustainability in high level sport organisations. Theoretically, we focus on sustainability in organisations, institutional logics and transparency in sport organisations. Managing social sustainability is about human-centred considerations such as well-being and promoting equality.

Project description

This research examines the management of social sustainability and the intersection of institutional logics. The research aims to provide new insights into the logics that drive sustainability in sport management and the implications of these institutional logics for sustainability. The research project will explore the historical change in institutional logics and stakeholder perceptions. The research project is particularly interested in how sport can be a sustainable workplace. Our research will provide new theoretical and practical insights to support sport policy making.

Goals

While the performance of athletes and sporting events are under constant public scrutiny, less attention has been paid to high standards of organising and management.  Sport operates in a high-pressure environment where high levels of commitment and performance are required. High performance sport is not an isolated island in society, but the demands of responsible management and sustainability are also present in this environment.

This research project uses qualitative and quantitative methods.

Work packages

WP 1: Institutional logics and pressure for high performance sport sustainability

The work package explores how the logic of top sport organisations has changed and which logics determine stakeholders' perceptions of social sustainability and its management in sport?

WP 2: High performance sport as a (un)sustainable workplace

The work package examines how the lack of institutional recognition perpetuates sport as a workplace and unsustainable practices? What impact do these have on the profession of elite athlete?
