I work as a professor in early childhood education at the Department of Education. Currently, I'm the vice-head of the Deparment of Education, responsible for development of the research enviroment at the department. My work includes research and teaching in multidisciplinary childhood studies and early childhood eduation. The teaching is mainly aimed to post-graduate level students, including supervision of PhD students. My tasks include also administrative tasks and interaction with a broader community outside university.
My research is situated at the crossroads of multidisciplinary childhood studies and early childhood education. Broadly defined, I study early childhood education institutions and children's everyday life from diverse perspectives in early childhood education settings. In different projects, I have focused on the institutional spaces for under-three-year olds, children's peer interactions and young children's agency in constructing their own (lived) places. In our broader projects, we have also focused on diverse educational transitions: transition from home to early childhood education (ECEC), other transitions during the ECEC path, transition to pre-primary education and from pre-preprimary education to school. The publications include also reflections and analyses about research ethics in studies with very young children and children as participants in research, ethnographic methodologies, and videoanalysis in using eye tracking glasses. The projects produce research based knowledge to decision making and development of ECEC policies and practices, and to teachers, students and others interested in children's everyday life and childhood studies.
