Towards transversal competences

Transversal competence refers to the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and dispositions that form the basis for lifelong learning and social participation. The effort to develop transversal competences connects the Finnish education system from early childhood education to upper secondary education. But, how can thinking and learning to learn, for example, be taught? And how to assess multiple literacy?

The peer-reviewed book Transversal competence in school is about learning and developing generic skills that transcend traditional subject boundaries as part of everyday school work. The different aspects of transversal competences will be addressed from the perspective of education in particular. By opening up the theoretical, historical and educational policy background, the book helps to understand the importance of broad competences in a changing world and how the general objectives defined in the curricula can be put into practice.

The book also looks to the future and explores the development of broad competences in alternative futures for education.

Book is a final outcome of “Assessment of transversal skills in formal and informal learning environments” project funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
