The book focuses on cutting-edge research in psychology and education alongside giving an overview of the key theorists. The team of expert contributors offers a holistic view on the development of adult thinking, representing perspectives from developmental, moral, and social psychology, as well as adult education and philosophy. These topics are divided into three sections: adult cognitive and moral development, perspectives of adult learning, and open questions and new approaches. They offer introduction to the main issues, analysis, and directions for future research. The first section deals with the research and development of both everyday and scientific thinking. The second thematic section looks at adult learning and knowledge construction and presents major trends in the research area. The third section presents some new perspectives and attempts to define methods and terms in the field.

The idea of this book is to seek and offer an integrative view on the development of adult thinking and learning processes. There is such a large variety of different approaches that it is impossible to fit them all in a single volume. Thus, the basic aim of this book is to describe some fundamental models and theories, and their links and connections to relevant major rivalling or parallel approaches. Hence, this book looks at the various aspects and research domains from multiple perspectives in an attempt to provide an integrative but critical view of the complex phenomena involved.

The developmental psychological and learning approaches presented in this book are independent but very closely associated areas. Across the thematic sections there are also references to wisdom research. These fields are rarely examined simultaneously or together, a gap which gave the main impetus for this book. It introduces fundamental issues of both everyday and scientific thinking, accounting for different thinking patterns relative to various real-world objects, concepts, values, social relationships, and existential issues. Some of the most important adult cognitive psychological and adult learning theories and models are addressed. Certain problematic philosophical questions are also analysed. The overarching idea of the whole book is to offer a multidimensional and holistic view on adult cognitive development, adult learning, and related research.

This book is essential reading for students and researchers in developmental psychology and related courses as well as adult educators and teachers working in adult education. It also has relevance for all those working in human resources.
