JYU practices safe building evacuation in case of fire alarm during National Fire Safety Week 25-29 Nov

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is organizing safety-related training activities at its campuses in Jyväskylä during week 48 (25-29th November). The training will take the form of evacuation exercises and will apply to all people in the building at the time of the exercise. The exercises are carried out by ringing the building's fire bells (except for MaA and MaD, where the alarm is raised by shouting).

The aim of the training is to improve the preparedness of people working on university premises in the event of a crisis or incident. The evacuation exercise will test the effectiveness of emergency plans and procedures in an emergency situation where a fire or other accident makes it necessary to evacuate people on the premises to a safer location. The exercise aims to develop the safety and fluidity of responding to a real emergency and to observe the audibility of the fire bells.

During the exercise, people in the buildings will be evacuated along the buildings' emergency exits to assembly points marked with a green assembly point traffic sign, located near the buildings . The duration of the exercise is approximately 15-20 minutes (including evacuation to the assembly point and return to the building). No smoke will be used during the exercise.

'This room is empty' door signs have been introduced in some university premises. Hang the sign on the door handle outside the room after everyone has left. The sign communicates that the space is empty, which speeds up the inspection of the premises and the operation of the emergency services. Remember that the signs are only to be used in an evacuation situation. Return the sign to its place after the exercise.

If possible, please reserve outdoor clothing before the start of the exercise, taking into account the time of year.

If you really need help during an exercice, shout for help an, if necessary, call 112. An emergency situation will interrupt the exercise.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Procedures in the event of accidents and incidents

How to act in the event of a fire alarm?

For everyone:

  • Prepare in advance by knowing the emergency exit routes from the property so that you can choose a safe and quick route out of the building. The emergency exit routes are marked with exit signs/lights (green lights/figures). Also find out where the assembly point is on the property where people will gather when exiting the building.
  • In the event of a fire alarm, leave the building immediately. Take only essential items (your outdoor clothing, phone and wallet) if they are quickly and easily accessible.
  • Move calmly along the exit route, avoiding crowds. Do not run.
  • Do not exit in a smoky area, but try to find a route that is free of smoke.
  • Do not use an elevator during a fire alarm. If you are in an elevator when the alarm sounds, exit the elevator at the next available floor and exit the building via the emergency exit.
  • If possible, assist and guide other people in the building to the exit routes.
  • Go to the assembly point and wait there for permission to return to the building or to leave. Leave space for rescue work.
  • Inform those attempting to enter the building that the building is under fire alarm and cannot be entered.
