The  at The Education University of Hong Kong (EduHK) aims to drive educational innovation by collaborating with Finnish institutions. JYU researchers Dr. Kristof Fenyvesi and Dr. Josephine Lau participate in several GRIFE special Interest Groups. Dr. Fenyvesi is the co-principal project supervisor of the Special Interest Group for STEAM Education.

On 23-28 August, the EduHK delegation was welcomed by the FIER’s Director, Dr Taina Saarinen, and Vice Director, Dr Päivi Häkkinen. This was followed by fruitful meetings with personnel from FIER, the ILE research group, Educa Flagship, and the Institute of Educational Leadership of JYU. Besides planning new avenues for further collaborations, the visit consolidated the joint efforts for innovative educational research among GRIFE and JYU researchers.

Highlights of the Visit

Social Robot Collaboration

Led by Professor YEUNG Siu Sze, Susanna, the Social Robot for English Language Learning project at the Education University of Hong Kong aims to enhance second language acquisition by developing a social robot prototype. In collaboration with JYU’s ILE and EDUCA Flagship RA3 group—comprising researchers, university lecturers, PhD students, and master’s students from the Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Education and Psychology, and JYU FIER—two days of productive meetings with Professor Yeung fostered potential collaboration opportunities to enrich international research on robotics in education.

Entrepreneurial Education and Teacher Leadership Collaboration

As the education leaders in the Hong Kong context, Dr Ho Chun Sing, Maxwell and Principal Chan Po Ling, Candy had a fruitful meeting with Dr Mikael Risku and  Dr Elina Fonsen from the Institute of Education Leadership. Along with JYU’s ILE group and visiting scholar Professor Samuel Kai Wah Chu from the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, potential collaboration ideas flourished during the fruitful discussion. 

In addition, Dr Ho and Principal Chan were warmly welcomed at the school visits in the Muurame region. By engaging in the discussions with Principal Aki Puustinen of  Muuramen Lukio, Principal Teppo Lairo and Petri Palve of  Mäkelänmäen koulu, Dr Ho and Principal Chan gained deeper understanding about Finnish schools and exchanged vivid ideas on education with the Finnish colleagues. Before leaving Jyväskylä, Dr Ho and Principal Chan visited Crazy Town, the co-working space in Jyväskylä, and studied innovative ‘edupreneurial’  co-creation practices in the Finnish context.

The Way Forward

In alignment with GRIFE’s mission, the visit fostered global collaborations in Finnish education research, paving the way for high-quality comparative studies aimed at addressing complex global educational challenges and shaping future educational policies.
