Hela's research focus on Power, Structures and Crises focuses on changes and practices in society and culture.

This focus area explores social and cultural changes in relation to social structures and power issues. The analysis of long-term phenomena characterizes historical research, whereas the temporal scale of ethnological and anthropological research tends to be more short-term. Research on crises and structural changes incorporates the study of political cultures and discourses, social and institutional crises, as well as cultural and economic changes and continuities.
