Forests in systemic transition
The project is part of "Forests in systemic transition: Balancing efficiency with fairness and resilience" (ForTran) consortium, which aims to design and facilitate a green and just transition in how we perceive and use forests. The sub-project at the Department of History and Ethnology examines the forest owners’ and forest professionals’ views and practices based on ethnographic fieldwork. The consortium is coordinated by Professor Mikko Mönkkönen from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ and also involves researchers from the University of Eastern Finland and Aalto University, as well as the Center for Natural Resources.

Project description
Forest owners' and forest and environmental professionals' perspectives on feasible and desirable forest use vary greatly. Acknowledging and making room for this plurality in social and cultural practices is an essential prerequisite for a socially just green transition. However, even if individuals have unique human–forest relationships, the prevailing discourses and practices within social networks of actors often form resistance to changes. The project studies what sociocultural aspects drive views and decisions on forest management and uses anthropological approaches to identify leverage points, practices, and places where small shifts could enable large-scale changes toward more resilient practices.
