Dissertation requirements: transition period

This webpage presents the dissertation requirements valid until 31.12.2024.

Doctoral students whose study right for doctoral studies began on or after 1 January 2024 will follow dissertation requirements valid from 1.1.2025.

Other doctoral students will be subject to a transition period, during which they can follow the dissertation requirements valid until 31 December 2024 or those valid as of 1 January 2025. The transition period will end on 31 December 2025 so that

  • if by the end of the transition period the permission for public examination of the dissertation has been granted, the dissertation can be assessed according to the dissertation requirements valid until 31.12.2024;
  • if permission for public examination of the dissertation has not been granted by 31.12.2025, the dissertation will be assessed according to the dissertation requirements valid from 1.1.2025.

Doctoral students who will be subject to a transition period and who plan to submit their dissertation manuscript for preliminary examination during 2025 should discuss with their supervisors in good time whether it is possible to obtain the permission for public examination for their dissertation manuscript before 31.12.2025. Consideration should be given to the following issues:

  • the time needed to finalise the manuscript for the preliminary examination
  • the time that the preliminary examiners have available for the preliminary examination according to the guidelines (one month, except for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences six weeks)
  • the time frame for the decision on the permission for public examination in each Faculty: if only the Faculty Council decides on the permission for public examination, the meeting schedules of the Faculty Council and the timetable for sending the agenda should be taken into account; if the Dean makes the decision on the permission for public examination, the end-of-year vacation periods should be taken into account.

If there is any doubt about getting the permission for public examination before the end of the transition period, it is recommended to follow the dissertation requirements valid from 1.1.2025.

General dissertation requirements

A dissertation is a research-based, solid scientific presentation from the doctoral student’s field of study. It represents the student’s ability to independently and critically apply the methods of scientific research and create new scientific information.

A dissertation must meet the following scientific criteria and requirements for learning and competence: A dissertation must: a) include new scientific information and justified results as well as be scientifically convincing; b) demonstrate the student’s critical thinking, profound knowledge of the research field, command of scientific research methods and ability to apply them; and c) be scientifically honest and follow the norms of research integrity.

The extent of a dissertation should be designed so that the doctoral degree can be completed in four years when studying full time.

A dissertation starts with an abstract that must (when applicable) explain the dissertation’s targets or research questions, central research methods, results and conclusions based on them. Regardless of the language of a dissertation, the abstract must be written at least in Finnish and English. In addition, dissertations may include abstracts in other languages.

The formats of a dissertation are article dissertation and monograph. For justified reasons, the faculty council may also approve a structure that deviates from the traditional article dissertation or monograph formats.

Dissertations completed at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ are published in the JYU Dissertations publication series. You can familiarize yourself with the dissertations in the .

NB: The publication and publicity of doctoral dissertations are governed by the .

Article dissertation

An article dissertation consists of peer-reviewed scientific publications, or manuscripts approved for publication, that discuss the same set of problems and a summary written by the doctoral student. An article dissertation that includes still unapproved manuscripts may also be approved if it meets the set scientific criteria. However, an article dissertation cannot include only manuscripts that have not been approved for publishing.

An article dissertation typically includes three to five peer-reviewed scientific articles. The number of required articles is affected by the discipline, the proportion of the author’s independent contribution as well as the (a) extent, (b) scientific quality and significance, and (c) publication forum of the articles.

The summary of an article dissertation should present the research questions that unite the parts of the study, the theoretical framework and the methodological solutions. The summary should also combine the key results and conclusions of the parts and assess their impact. The summary should be a balanced piece of text that is based on scientific literature and the articles included in the dissertation.

An article dissertation may include publications that have several authors. The doctoral student’s independent contribution to the joint articles of the dissertation must be clearly described in the summary of the dissertation.

For justified reasons, a single publication may be used in the dissertations of more than one student if the authors have made independent contributions to the article. This must be noted when describing a doctoral student’s independent work.

In an article dissertation completed during doctoral studies at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, the connection of the articles to the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ must be presented in the affiliation information in accordance with the ethical principles of publishing at the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥.

The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ promotes responsible and open science for dissertations. The published articles of an article dissertation are self-archived in the JYX publication archive in compliance with the guidelines for self-archiving and open access of research publications at JYU.

Monograph dissertation

A monograph dissertation is based on independent scientific research and has not been published in this format before.

Field-specific instructions

Faculty councils may append field-specific specifications to these dissertation requirements, such as instructions on the number and quality of articles required for an article dissertation, the use of the doctoral student’s publications and joint articles in a monograph dissertation, and the structure of a dissertation other than an article or monograph dissertation.
